I saw an orthopaedic surgeon a few months ago and was told in no uncertain terms that no matter how desperate I got, surgery would not be an option at this point in time. I am already showing some signs of restrictive lung disease and also some heart strain. Although surgery was recommended when I was a teenager, I refused at the time, always assuming that if things became really desperate, I could always resort to it later in life. I guess I was wrong!
Anyway, I have been trying to digest this news over the past few months. I am now considering early retirement. I have so much I want to do and I know now that I need to enjoy life while I still can!
Thanks for your reply. I was my very first post but I am looking forward to more discussion in the future. I am so glad I found this forum!
(By the way....I adopted the name "CurvyLady" from the x-ray technologist who did my latest set of back x-rays. She told me that she was having trouble getting a good picture because I was such a "CurvyLady"!!!!)
Thanks for the reply. So once the heart is strained this doctor would not operate because of complications with the surgery? How bad is your signs of restrictive lung disease? I am also showing signs of this and wonder if I would be abl to handle the operation. My heart is also showing a little strain. I wonder what a doctor might say to me. Thanks for alittle more information and your willingness to talk to me.
Hi Becky,
I have to tell you that I have had only one doctor's opinion.I have been advised by another very helpful member of this forum that there are some doctors out there with a great deal of expertise in correcting curvatures and that I should seek a second opinion. I am currently researching some other doctors and I may well take this advice. I haven't given up hope yet!!
These things are so individual and I would suggest that the only way you will know for sure whether or not surgery is possible for you would be to consult a spine specialist yourself. There are so many factors involved.....age, degree of curvature, heart and lung function and of course the expertise of the doctor. I avoided seeing a doctor myself for many years and now I realize if I had done it sooner, things would probably have been easier.
Take care and keep me updated!
