    i love him

yes, he performed a revision surgery on me about 12 years ago and was totally awesome ... we actually sought him out after bad experiences with my previous doctors. he's got a wonderful bedside manner.

          Dr Alexis Shelokov

          frankie:
Dr. Shelokov operated on me Feb. 8 /05. I will be three months on May 8.
I believe he is a good surgeon, he certainly will go into the operating room
with enough surgeons. He does not do the initial cuts through the
stomach and around organs, another surgeon specialist does that. I talked to several patients my age ( 55 to 63) who were very pleased and like him a lot. I also heard indirectly from a neurosurgeon and another general surgeon that Shelakov is the one to see in Dallas for revision surgery or older woman surgery ( I am 63). I believe he is is very bright and does unusual things with the back. I have heard several radiologists say they were in awe at what he did with the backs he operated on. I can't say at this point anything about my surgery outcome as I have not been in recovery long enough, at almost 3 months, I am still in much discomfort and wonder if I can go back to work at 6 months. At this point I am infection free, and hope my recovery holds.I will render a verdict
on my surgery success after two years when I should be well.

My original surgeon no longer performs scoliosis surgery, and he referred me to Dr. Shelokov after reviewing my case with colleagues from the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. My surgery is scheduled in September with Dr. Shelokov. My Harrington Rod is fractured and displaced, resulting in a kyphosis, failed fusion and degenerative discs. I have been very impressed with the Baylor Scoliosis Center and Dr. Shelokov.

Good luck, Judy. Keep us posted about your meetings with Shelokov. You
will see more of his nurse, Eric who is a wonderful, positive young man. How old are you now? What did Shelokov tell you he was going to do on your back?

I am planning surgery with Dr. Shelokov. He will do an anterior and posterior repair to the failed fusion surgery I had in Fort Worth in l986. I am 49 years old now and found out through a routine chest xray that my Harrington Rod was broken. I don't know how long it has been broken but it could explain a lot of my discomfort, you think? Anyway, I also am having some discs removed and replaced with artificial ones. Fusion I think will be from T5 to S1. I just want to get it done so I can get on with life. How are you feeling? I have read a little about your ups and downs and hope you are healing and feeling well. I know recovery is a long process, especially the older we are. My recovery in 1986 was unremarkable, but I was 30 years old too. I am still working full time now and hope to after the recovery process.

                  Hi Judy...

Do you know where your artificial discs will be placed (above or below the fusion). Also, do you know if you're the first to have the artificial discs placed above or below a long fusion? It's something I've been considering for several years, but a surgeon I trust completely told me that I should let others be the guinea pigs. The only other person I know who had an arificial disc placed below her fusion had a horrid outcome.

                  Regards,
                  Linda

                    Hi Frankie,

Good to see you still on the board, and doing your research on surgeons. I know your case is quite complex, and it is important you find the very best doctor to perform your surgery. Just a quick update on my daughter. Her surgeon was Dr. Boachie, with whom I remember you have an appointment in August. She is doing incredibly well, and three months post-op has virtually no pain and a near perfect correction. Boachie continues to be very supportive and responsive whenever we have a question or need help, even though he's hundred's of miles from us, we are still very happy with him.

I have an adult friend with a very complex revision surgery scheduled with Boachie for June. This is her 6th surgery, and she has been all over the world getting opinions. I will let you know how she does... I keep your website up on my computer and look at it from time to time. I continue to send my positive thoughts and prayers your way for a successful outcome.

                    Hugs to you,
                    Susanna

Mother of a 17 year old daughter. Her "S" curve was 40 degree thoracic from T3 to T9, and a 70 degree rotatory thorcolumbar from T9 to L4. She was operated on March 9th, 2005 by Dr. Boachie-Adjei at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. She was fused from T11 to L3, using an anterior approach, and the major curve corrected to 20 degrees. She's doing great!

                      Linda,
The artificial discs for me will be placed below my spinal fusion as they are "shot" as one doctor described them. I never knew discs could degenerate below the fusions with scoliosis surgery. I am learning a lot. Thank you for the resource books you suggested on scoliosislinks.com. I have several on the way to me in the mail. I am scared somewhat about my pending surgery and want to be informed as much as possible. My brother had artifical discs placed during spinal surgery and has had good results. I believe they were below the fusion. His was not a long fusion as mine will probably be though.

                        Hi Judy...

I think I've confused you. Artificial discs are normally a replacement for fusion surgery. In your case, you have a previous fusion from scoliosis surgery. Apparently, your surgeon wants to place artificial discs below your current fusion instead of adding the degenerated levels to your existing fusion. As far as I know, there have been no cases reported in the literature, of artificial discs being placed in people with scoliosis, let alone people with long fusions for scoliosis.

You may have a great outcome, but if you're concerned about being a guinea pig, I would definitely discuss this with your surgeon to find out: 1) how many artificial discs he's placed and 2) if he's placed artificial discs in patients with prior scoliosis fusions.

I hope you'll report back with the details.

                        Regards,
                        Linda

                          Surgery from Shelokov

                          Judy:
Glad to hear from you. As far as your artificial discs, Dr. Shelokov has
a patent pending on his own, don't know whether it has cleared patent date yet. You asked about my progress-I'm limping along,I am fused to just above the tailbone so my hips are still giving me aches and pains. I can do no bending down other then a genuflection on one knee (which is darned difficult) At 49 you should have a shorter recovery then mine. The sitting part is probably
the worst. I still don't eat out with my husband as I don't sit well for any
                          length of time.
You will be in the newest hospital, Baylor Plano, with the best of everything. You won't remember much as they will whisk you to Dallas Baylor within a few days for PT. I wasn't crazy about Dallas Baylor. All your entrance cuts (in and around the organs)will be performed by a Dr. martin. All the rest will be Shelokov and Jeff) After surgery, you will deal with Eric Bucyl almost exclusively. He is Mr. good guy, a wonderful nurse who will discuss your xrays ( look for evidence of fusion) and dispense pain medication. You will see Dr Shelokov the first visit, then only on the fifth month visit ( unless you have a specific problem). Email me privately if you wish. Kathleen
