  • Curvature difference betwn supine and standing x-rays?

I finally got copies of my x-rays taken 2 yrs ago. The curves actually aren't as bad as it was decribed on the xray report. I assumed my worst curve was over 50 degrees since the radiologist said I had a severe thoracolumbar curve. (I measured my curve w/ the cobb's angle method.. (I could be wrong..but it gave me a ballpark figure..) It looks as though my biggest curve is only moderate.

The radiology place took the xray while I was lying down. I know that for scoliosis xrays are taken standing to measure the curve.

Does anyone know if there is significant difference in curves between standing/supine xrays?

    Hi Green...

Yes, I believe that curves are usually flattened in the supine position. However, I wouldn't trust your own measurements, mostly because it's difficult to be sure that you've selected the correct end vertebrae.

I recommend that you find a scoliosis specialist who knows enough to have the films taken in the proper position. :-)

      Hi Green,

I just wanted to tell you that with me, there was a big difference between laying and standing x-rays. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I know it was a very significant difference. You absolutely need to get standing x-rays done.
