  • Micro Valve Prelapse

Went for a regular checkup and the doctor said she heard a faint heart murmur. Sending me for an echocaridigram. Does this typically mean that my scoliosis might be affecting my heart? Does anyone else know about this?

    Thanks,
    Becky

      Hi there:

A heart murmur doesn't necessarily mean you have MVP. But if you do, keep in mind that MVP and scoliosis often occur together (Google them to find thousands of references), but not because the scoli is "causing" the heart problem. MVP is often part of a whole pattern of body type and physiological style -- tall, female, comparatively small boned, long arms and legs, a tendency to be somewhat hyperreactive to loud noises and bright lights, etc. Some researchers hypothesize that the whole "MVP syndrome" thing arises at the same stage during fetal development.

I have MVP, diagnosed when I was in my 20s because I was experiencing rapid heartbeat when under stress (final exams in college). When I walked into the cardiologist's office he said "I know what's wrong with you" before I even sat down. MVP is no problem whatsoever. Keep up your moderate, regular aerobic exercise, learn muscle relaxation for the when the heartrate goes up, and take your antibiotics when having dental work or giving birth. Other than that, you can basically ignore it.

My daughter, who has scoli (I don't) is having spinal fusion done in May, and they will be giving her an echocardiogram prior, which will show whether she also has MVP. I was concerned that if she does, this would make the surgery more complex or difficult, but have been reassured on this point. As scoli often occurs in children with many other complex physical issues (CP, MD, etc.), no scoli specialist is alarmed by a little floppy heart valve.

If your murmur is, in fact, not MVP, but something new being caused by your spinal curvature, that is, of course, an entirely different matter. My understanding is that only very large curves have an impact on heart function (I've heard numbers like "greater than 80 degrees"). Does this apply?

      All the best.

        heart murmer and scoliosis

        hello..
in my particular case, my heart murmer with mitral valve prolapse turned out to actually be a congenital heart defect i only found at age 31.i had no symptoms and had no clues that i had this serious condition..
this was a serious issue for which i had to have heart surgery to correct
i have had scoliosis since at least pre-teen and currently have a 66 deg T cueve with 55 deg compensatory curve with no prior treatments. i am currently 46 years old.
in essense i discovered i had multiple issues not just the scoliosis..also infertility..otherwise i am a healthy active adult..
The testing with the cardiologist should settle the question of any heart issues..take care, kimbo

i have a heart murmur and scoliosis

          hey,
about a year after my surgery, my pediatrician discovered a heart murmur, that she said was pretty bad. i went to see a cardiologist, and after a few tests, he said it was nothing to worry about, however, they did have a hard time doing an ultrasound because of how bad my scoliosis was that it moved my heart a little. they did say that the scoliosis surgery may have caused the murmur, but they cant say for sure.
hope you don't mind me answering even though this is on the adult board and i'm only 15. I just felt like i would share my story!

                MVP for Searching/link

Please don't take offense. I worry about lay persons recommending supplements(magnesium) for heart symptoms(mitral valve prolapse). It can be dangerous because magnesium is used to treat some cases of cardiac arrest.
I will write the rest of my concerns in a private message since this is really not in the spirit of the forum.

                  M.v.p.

My boyfriend was diagnosed with Micro Valve Prelapse when he was 12 years old and had been told there is no certain cause of it nor was there anything wrong with him other then that. They had told him there was no cure for it or fix period. I am just curious as to whether or not there is a surgery for it or not, or if there is anything that I can personally do to help him when he goes into his attacks. This is really scaring me, we have been together for almost 3 years and just recently engaged to be married. I'm scared of the marriage because I couldn't bare with loosing him. If anyone has any information, Please, HELP!

                  Thank you a bunch!

This is very common all over the world. Here is an article explaining it:

                      Thanks again
