  • Any ideas what might go on when I go to see a specialists?

Hi, my name is Nichol and I'm 24 years old and just found out that I have scoliosis. I had been having back pain for over a year now so I decided to go to a Chiropractor and he took the xrays and explained to me that I had what's called Scoliosis. Not sure of what it was at the time I ran to the internet and looked up some things about it. Naturally I had set an appt. with my family doctor and she took more xrays and all that was said is that she wanted me to go see a specialists, but the appt. is not until May 20th. So my husband also goes to the chiropractor and I decided not to go anymore after having one adjustment until I go see the Specialists. The chiropractor had shown my husband my xrays and said he figured out the degree of it and said it is only 20 degrees (said by the chiropractor) not that I don't believe he knows what he's doing I just feel more comfortable with a specialists. Therefore does anyone know what might be done when I go see this specialists, since I am 24, would a back brace be a suggestion??? And I also have seen that back pain is not associated with scoliosis??? Is this true?? If anyone has any kind of suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it, mine is definatley not as serious as alot of your children or yourselves, but I would like to treat it now so it does not get any worst. Hi Nichol...

Despite what you'll read on some websites, bracing cannot help you since you're already skeletally mature. Seeing an orthopaedist is a good start. Assuming that your curve is small, you might find help from a physical therapist who specializes in the spine. You might also find help from something like yoga or Pilates, however you'll need to be careful that the therapy addresses the fact that the muscles on the right side of your body are different (shorter or longer) than those on the left. Exercises that engage your back muscles equally may cause more pain and damage.

    Good luck!

    Regards,
    Linda
