  • Daughters scolios surgery

My daughter will have surgery some time in January. My prediciment is this, one Doctor would like to use bone from the bone bank. A different Doctor plans on taking bone from her hip. My question is what are the pros and cons of this. I have heard that the bone removal and pain is as worse or worse than the back surgery and that the healing process could last even longer. I would think that the cutting of the back would be tough enough, let alone having to cut into her hip for bone. On the other hand, I do not no if I like the idea a cadiver bone. If any one has been through this, I would appreciate your feed back. Thanks to all who have replied thus far.

My doctor took bone graft from the ribs rather than the hip. It hurts, and breathing is very difficult, but I think in the long run, the pain is less. I don't really know though, just thought I'd add my bit.

            Bone grafts

I have had both rib (1) removal and hip bone removal for grafts. I found that the rib is more painful than that of the hip. I didn't feel that the rib removal is any more uncomfortable than the surgery itself. But having said that, the discomfort lasts longer than the back surgery. My rib cage on the side of the removal is "sensitive". For example if someone tried to "tickle"me I would have to break off their fingers LOL for touching or putting pressure on my ribcage.

I had the bone graft taken from my hip and had no pain that I can recall. Of course, I don't think you notice with all the pain in your back! I had spinal fusion 10 years ago and the only problem I have related to the bone graft is a crazy tingly sensation in the area. Hope this helps ya out!

Thanks jerseymurrys, my daughter will have the surgery on 01/26/04 in New Orleans, La. At last report, the Dr. had decided not to use bone from her hip. We go on 01/20/04 for all the pre-testing etc. I will know for sure then. I know she has to do this, but I sure hate it. Hope you are doing well and keep my little darling (Hannah) in ya'lls prayers

                  Hip bone question...

                  Steve,
I had a spinal fusion in 1996 to correct scoliosis. Bone was taken from my left hip and I do recall it being rather sore for some time as was my back obviously. I think it depends on the individual regarding what will hurt worse, etc, but my hip healed just fine and gives me no problems now. The scar is a little wider than the hairline scar down my back, but other than that no problems. Granted each situation and person is different and my respond differently, but overall I can say I was very pleased to choose taking bone from my own body. Hope all goes well with your daughter. How old is she? My surgery was a blessing and I would do it again for sure. Hopefully your daughter will benefit as much as I have.
Good luck to you and your family.

                    Hi April,
My daughter is 13 years old and is on the dance team. She is disappointed to have to miss out on competition, but in the long run she will be better off doing this at an ealry age I would think. We are all kind of nervous, but everyone we talk to gives us nothing but encouraging words. She seems to appear that she is ready to get it over with, she says she is tired of talking about it. Lets do it ! I let all know how we do.

                    Thanks All

I saw my ortho specialist yesterday because I have been having lower back pain. In conversation he mentioned that many people don't take this surgery serious and pick up their activities where they left off, causing damage and pain. Make sure your doctor is clear on what activities she will be able to participate in. I was told absolutely no running and only low-impact activities such as swimming and biking. I started running after my first child to loose the weight and I did -- but am paying for it now! I hope that her scoloisis or spinal fusion is not as severe as mine and can continue her activity but follow the doctors instructions. Be positive -- There's more successes than failures!

Thanks jerseymurrys, we are dealing with that already. She thinks she is going to be well enough to try out for the high school dance team. We are telling her now, that she will have to sit out a year and then try. The Dr. has been pretty strait forward as to what she will be able to do and not do. I sure it will be a battle once she starts feeling better.
