I was just recently diagnosed with Scoliosis, I'm not really sure what kind. My spine has a curve to the right and that results to my walking "funny" . My mother thougth it had to do with my hips ( i was born with Congenital Left Hip Disorder) but my specialist said my hips are fine and ran xrays and Scoliosis was the result. My specialist says it should be nothing to worry about as I have finished growing so it should not worsen. He is sending me back for xray's to see if it worsens in a few months and if not then he said no worries.
I was wondering if there was anyone else who was diagnosed with this at the age of 20 and had to have surgery to fix it? I'm not sure of the degree of the curve because he didnt tell me, all i know is that my right side is 6cms higher then my left.

I was diagnosed at the age of 20 with mild scoliosis when I went to a chiropractor for chronic back pain....
My curve couldn't have been more than 20 degrees.
After a while under the care of a chiropractor with negative results (no reduction in pain), I went to a sports medecine doctor who said my curve was caused by inflamation and muscle spasams and he put me in physical therapy 3x a week for 3 months. During the first two months, my shoulders became less and less even, my waist disappeared on my left side.
I stopped physical therapy, and started looking for a scoliosis specialist.
My curve had progressed to 52 degrees in just a couple months time. So less than a year after my diagnosis, I underwent surgery.

      RE: scoliosis disgnosis at 20

      hello..
I did not have the surgery, but am responding to your post re: info in general
i was diagnosed with scoliosis at about 23 when i decided to have my crooked back checked out. It was not hurting but i wondered. I do not remember what my curves were back then, but was told since I was done growing they would not get any worse..
      Well.. surprise..they did!!
I am currently 46 years old and just in November went to get a check because the last couple of years I feel my back tired and needing pillow support at seating for any length of time..some minor pains..but was shocked when my Xrays showed a curve of 66 deg thorasic with 55 deg compensatory lumbar, and was told that it was severe.
I was told to "strongly consider" this major surgery of fusion.
Well, I've looked at the pros and cons and decided to follow up at some point this year with a more prominant spinal surgeon and recheck the curves, but until I feel it is imperative, I am not going to borrow trouble by assuming I am going to be this hunched over disabled invalid in another 10 years.
Most folks in these forums have had surgery at least once it seems, but unless it starts to affect my quality of life I will leave it alone.
What is important to remember for everyone I think is that each person is different and nothing should be assumed.
Yesterday I just did a 13 miles strenous hike in 4 hours time walking the whole time with no rests, and most weekends I hike out weather permitting, and am a real active person.
I cannot imagine checking into a hospital like tomorrow for this big major surgery, and being layed up maybe up to a year, and then possibly being semi limited after that..maybe it won't totally work then, open up to a possible second or third surgery?? not for me..at least at this point.
My point..had I went ahead with a surgery back at the age I was dignosed my quality of life these past 20 years surely would have been compromised and likely a second surgery would be looming about now..
This is only my view..another thought..
      Take care, Kimbo
