    Hi Everyone,
Its been 7 months and I'm finally taking that cruise I wanted, but I'm taking 4 out of the 5 kids. I'll have plenty of family time..LOL...I need advice on scar protection..Is there a cream that anyone used that worked well???Do I just put sun tan lotion with a 45 SP? Is there a special protection cream for scars....Thanks..

    HI Spincon,

Oh my gosh, that is the very question my daughter and I have been going round and round about!
We are going on a cruise also and she wants to tan, since I am a skin cancer patient I am very pro suncreen, but I don,t want to make her put just any kind on those scars untill I hear more from this forum and check with my dermatologist.
My other daughter had knee surgery last year and then tanned.
Her physical therapist noticed it right away and said he knew she did that bc her scar is now purple. He was not happy about it she said.
Iam slow but will call my dermo and ask her surgeon about the sun on the scars before we go.

        No sun on scar

I don't have my scar yet, but I love to tan and my Dr. has told me already that I will not want to tan that scar for a year. So I would do whatever it takes to keep your scar out of the sun. Either use the highest sunscreen available, or that zinc ointment that doesn't allow any sunlight, and it doesn't wash off. And yes, it might be a good idea to use a t-shirt as well. Anyway, have a wonderful time on the cruise.

          Connie,
My answer to can you still get sun thru a tee shirt while tanning is YES!!!!!!
Between the intense sun and reflection of water I got fried in cozumel while snokleing yrs ago.
Of course I was young and wore no suncreen but I know it can come thru.
So I bet if you wear zinc or suncreen of somesort and the shirt you'll be fine.
Now we go to the lake alot and are in the sun and while in Hawaii I bought a sort of shirt the surfers wear. It is not a wetsuit but a regular type material that feels just like a shirt. I have one longsleeve and a shortsleeve one. They are great. I think if you go to abcstores.com (a Hawaii store) you can find some. I'm not sure but let me know if you can't and I'll look more into where I have seen them.
          When is your cruise?
I will call my dermo before then.
          We go in March.

My Dr. told me to use Zinc Oxide on my scar when I go out in the sun.

              cocoa butter

When I had my back surgery, my doctors and specialists suggested that i use cocoa butter on the scar. It helps to soften the scar and really help it to fade. My scar runs from the bottom of the next all the way to the bottom of my hips, so I definitely had plenty to try and hide. And honestly, most of it you can barely even see.

                thanks for the tip

that's good to know. I've heard controversy as to whether anything applied to the scar really helps, but why not try it, since it's not going to cause any harm. Has anyone used the product Mederma that is being advertised on TV right now?

I got so sea sick...and I gained 4 pounds with all the deserts I ate..LOL....For all those having surgery , it takes a long time to recup...I have been getting mild butt pains from the graft...will go over with my PT on how I can minamize pain....well....thanks again for the info and good night...

                            Scar Protection

                            Hola

When I go out in the sun I use a factor 60 Avéne which is extreme sunblock cream and it works very well, however it is a bit like the sun block you would use when ski ing as it is very thick and does not rub in.

However, before I started using this I had a bad Summer and my scar bled from over exposure in the sun and it scared me, I have used this ever since

I live in Spain and we have 300 days of sunshine all year round so I make sure now that I am always careful.

                            It is also water resistant.

                            Enjoy your cruise.
