    Hey Kimbo,

I'm 49 and I first found out I had scoliosis when I was around 12 living in Japan. My dad was in the Air Force. Nothing was done then. When we lived in Germany it was rechecked at the age of 18 and still nothing done. January 2004 had x-rays done to see why I was starting to have back pain. Turns out my curves had progressed to 79 degrees thorasic and 44 lumbar. I had A/P surgery done in April 2004. I am almost 9 months post-op and doing pretty good. I may have to go back for another surgery to correct a balance issue. My scoliosis never caused any pain or problems until the last 7 or 8 years. Feel free to ask any questions.

    April 8 & 12, 2004 - Anterior/Posterior surgery 15 hours & 7 hours
    Thorasic - 79 degree down to 22
    Lumbar - 44 degree down to 18
    Fused T2 to sacrum
    June 2, 2005 - Pedicle subtraction osteotomy @L3 7 hours
MAY 21, 2007 - Pedicle subtraction osteotomy @ L2, extended the fusion to S2 and added pelvic instrumentation 9 hours

    FUSED T2 - SACRUM 2

        Kimbo,
It seems to be rather common for the curves to increase over the years and to start causing problems in your 40s-50s. I was diagnosed w/scoliosis as a teen and nothing was done then. Lived an active life, ignoring the scoliosis until a few years ago. My body was changing and I started to have pain. This fall I had surgery and it has been a difficult recovery but I am hoping for the eventual good outcome.

          Hi All,

If anyone is in, or particularly has passed, their 40's and 50's and is still going strong without surgery, please post!

I am 56-years old and have never had surgery. I've posted in "Psychological Effects" and was joined by Nutmeg, who is 47-years old. We seem to be feeling fine. (Knock wood!) I have a 59 degree thoracic and 71 degree lumbar curve.

Any other examples? I personally am looking for role-models! There doesn't seem to be much information anywhere about elder health and scoliosis without surgery.

          Thanks,

          Octavia

Hi there I have just joined this forum I am 52 years old and I have had my curvature since I was 11 years old,I went to the hospital at that time and they kept an eye on my growth as it was I was an early starter and i only grew another 4 inches and they decided that at that time I would not need surgery so I have had no surgery or brace, I don't even know what degree my curvature is, I have been disabled for 12 years now and I know that over the past 3 years I have got really bad I also have Cervical Spondylosis now which has got a lot worse over the last few years, I feel very let down with my GP at this moment in time, and feel as if I'm being fobbed off but from what I have read on this forum I'm going back and insist that I be sent to an Scoliosis Specialist as I have not seen one since I was young.

I was diagnosed with Fibromayalgia 2 years ago and I do not get much sleep with the amount of pain, I have struggled to keep on my feet the past 2 years, because I cannot stand for long or walk very far and have been totally been house bound, hence I have just got a wheelchair so I can get out of the house when feeling well enough.

I would love to hear from people that are in the same age bracket and hear there storys.
I have just noticed something and this is going to sound strange, as I was helped out of the bath and I looked at the position of my belly button which was always in line with my breast bone seems to have gone to the right of my breast bone now has anyone else had this happen to them or is it a sign that my spine has become more twisted

              Hi Pantercat,

My breastbone had started shifting to the right this past year. The right side is where my hump is. Now after surgery it's back in the center.

                In My Seventies

I am new to the forum. I am 72 years old, was diagnosed at age 12, wore a Milwukee brace for four years, and no formal treatment after that. I do not know what the degree of curvature was at the time, but I was warned that pregnancy could worsen the curves. I moved after marriage and did not check curves for many years. However, two pregnancies apparently did not cause observable damage at the time so I did not seek a spine specialist until I was 40. I was experiencing intermittent pain after a day of working. My curves were measured and exercises were recommended. There was no curve change until I was in my 60's. They went from 75 to 85 degrees.
Is there anyone out there in my age bracket that has not had surgery?

                  Hi Zarafa...

If you don't find someone here, let me know. There's a woman in my scoliosis support group in her 70's with severe scoliosis and no surgery.

                  Regards,

                    sounds similar

Hi, I also have just joined this forum. I am 40 years old, and also now not working due to backpain. I have been an office clerk for 17 years. I have been diagnosed with leg length descrepancy, hypermobility, fybromyalgia and a disc bulge at L5/S1. I have great difficulty with standing and walking. Unable to do many daily living acitivities.Sitting all day is out of the question now. I also borrow a wheelchair or scooter in the large stores. My backpain is a constant reminder as to how I can function for the day.
