  • Washington DC/Baltimore Area

My 11 year old daughter has been treated by two spine surgeons and I would recommend them both to anyone looking for a good scoliosis doctor in this area. One is Dr. John Stinson in Rockville, MD who treated my daughter until her scoliosis went beyond what he was comfortable operating on. Dr. William Lauerman at Georgetown University did her surgery in July of 2003.

        Hi Erin -

Yes, Dr. Lauerman treats adults. He specializes in spinal surgery; not in pediatrics. However he treats children too. I hope you will see him. I cannot say enough good things about him. He has been doing regular follow-ups with my daughter now for over a year. We are very pleased with the treatment he has given our daughter. Because he treats ALL ages, he can address my daughter's needs now, with an eye to her future. He has a pretty good idea what kind of shape her back will be in 30, 40 years down the road, and treats her now, with that in mind.
He is thorough and very responsive. Good luck!

We live in Vienna, Va (northern Virginia). My daughter (14) was just diagnosed with a 23 curve. Does anyone know of a dr. who treats children in the Washington -Va area? Anyone know about Dr. Lauerman? Does he see teens?

            Hi Kathleen,

My 13 year old daughter has an appointment to see Lauerman in a couple of months. She's got no other option at this point but surgery. As far as surgeons go, he is considered one of the nation's top docs and I have heard nothing but raves from his patients.

At 23 degrees, you might want to check out a couple of options before going to a surgeon. Pneumex therapy is something relatively new and promising: (http://www.pneumex.com). Also, Dr. Betz (http://www.spineuniverse.com/display...ticle1895.html) is doing some really interesting things with stapling as an alternative to traditional bracing. These are a couple of things I wish I'd known about when my daughter was at 23 degrees...

            Best of luck!

Mother of a 17 year old daughter. Her "S" curve was 40 degree thoracic from T3 to T9, and a 70 degree rotatory thorcolumbar from T9 to L4. She was operated on March 9th, 2005 by Dr. Boachie-Adjei at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. She was fused from T11 to L3, using an anterior approach, and the major curve corrected to 20 degrees. She's doing great!

Thanks for your reply. The curve isn't bad enough for surgery but the question when she will need a brace. Hopefully, we won't have to wait a couple of months as she could have a hugh growth spirt. She still haven't gotten her period yet, which makes the whole situation more complex and I do worry. When we took her bone age she was a year plus delayed in her growth. That's good and bad I guess.

Thanks for your help. Good luck with your daughter and hang in there.l

                Kathleen,

We were in the same place a couple years ago. Check out the alternatives to bracing while you still have the time. No reason she can't do bracing and Pneumex, or stapling instead of the dreaded brace. Best of luck!
