    question about alcohol.

    Hey everyone! Happy thanksgiving!!!!!
    I have a question: My surgery is Monday the 6th and I have my pre- op exams this Monday. Do you think it's ok if I have a glass of vine today or a beer with my thanksgiving dinner?
    My doctor did not mention anything about alcohol...

    Scoliosis Diagnosed at age 12. Wore Milwaukee brace for 2 years.
    Now age 32
    Pre-op curves: C86-T98-L37
    Surgery date: 12/6/2010 (anterior) 12/10/2010 (posterior)
    Fused T2 to L5 with thoracoplasty.
    Post-op curves: C48-T47-L17

      It really shouldn't matter, your body will have long dealt with a glass of booze by Monday My surgeon has been known to tell his adult patients to have a glass of wine the night before their surgeries, to help them relax!

        I agree... drinking alcohol, at least in moderation, should be no problem until 12 hours prior to surgery.

          Ha!, yeah... a glass of good red wine is suppose to be good for you. I don't know if that's a myth or true...
          Just in case I might have 1/2 of a glass just to celebrate...

            My pre-op direction sheet said "No alcohol after 6pm the evening prior to surgery". . .so, CHEERS!!!

              Being a lover of red wine, that would have been the first question I asked, lol!

                Alcohol should be out of your system completely within 24-48 hours, depending on the amount. My daughter is an anesthesiology resident and I asked her about wine before surgery and she said to be on the extra safe side, just don't drink within 48 hours of surgery.

                  as an alcohol/drug counselor, i can say that all your forum friends have told you the correct answer......though 24-48 hours is a VERY wide margin!! depending on body weight (and gender), alcohol is usually gone from the body in about 10 hours...

                  so enjoy your wine....
