  • Burlington, VT surgeons

Has anyone had an experience with the surgeons at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, VT? I've found two -- S. Elizabeth Ames and John T. Braun. Having read through many of the threads on this forum, one of the most important criterion in picking a surgeon seems to be the number of surgeries performed per year. I spoke with the scheduling person, and she was unable to tell me how many surgeries either Dr. Ames or Dr. Braun performed a year, and I really don't want to waste their time and my money making an appointment to figure this out. (I should mention that the only reason that I might be interested in either of them is that I live in Vermont and they are the only two "in-network" providers; anyone else will entail a fight with my insurance company to get coverage.) Thank you so much for any insight you might have!

You are the 2nd person from Vermont to post here recently....

Since he is in Vermont, this makes insurance and travel logistics much easier....

If I were in Vermont, I would go and talk to him.
    Good luck

Thanks so much for your reply, Ed. I had found Dr. Braun's credentials online, but that was it. I did speak with his office to inquire as to how many surgeries he does a year, but his scheduling assistant couldn't/wouldn't answer the question. I was really hoping someone out there would have some first-hand experience, but I suppose that I could ask his office for references, huh? Even though Burlington is in-state, it's still a 2 1/2 hour drive for me to get there so I was feeling a little cautious about spending the time and money to meet with him. You are right, though -- there's no harm in meeting with him and, in the grand scheme of things, it's probably worth it!

You will have to sit down face to face with every surgeon you talk to. This is the way it goes. The girls in the office will not contribute much....If you are interested, you will have to travel and yes, spend money. Scoliosis is not cheap. Been there done that!

"Hiring" your surgeon can take time. Usually, the good ones like to try non-invasive things like shots, and PT, and they also like to document progression, or see progression. Pain has weight. He will want to know about your pain.....

The first meeting will basically be a feeling out between you and him. He will shoot x-rays right away, and talk about things. No good surgeon will say, "Lets do this next week".

There are lists of questions... Here are a few.

Welcome, and keep posting. I would also like a ski report from time to time, I spent many days skiing at Stowe in the 60s. LOL

          Very interesting cat this one.

He has worked with staples and tethering in addition to working with Ogilvie and the genetic stuff.

Curious that he doesn't list memebership with the SRS on his webpage but is listed on the SRS page.
