  • Low radiation x-ray

Continuing the "quest for the brace" we have found out that there is an EOS 2D/3D x-ray, available now in Charlottesville, Virginia.
It is installed at Spinal Surgery Associates clinic of Dr Sukovitch.
They are willing to do an x-ray for outpatients.
We were fortunate so far to have our daughter’s x-rays done in Canada (Montreal) that already had it in place.
The change of the brace (Spinecor to Rigo-Cheneau) does not give us this prospect any more.
We are sharing this info for any interested parents/patients and you can research further details on your own. Since our child is fairly young (8), it does make a significant difference to have this done in a least harmful manner.

I was at a symposium with most of the scoliosis research world (Harrington Spine Symposium) in 2005 when Jean Dubousset gave a presentation on the EOS system. It was amazing! Almost too good to be true. The spatial resolution with such low exposure to radiation was unbelievable. I've always wondered what happened with this technology.

They are willing to do an x-ray for outpatients.
When you say that, is there some reason why this would be unique? Why wouldn't they do it for outpatients?

Ahhhh-you made me smile! We live in Canada and although it is a good public health system, there are glitches as well. One of them is that you can't simply pay the hospital in Montreal and ask them for the same type of service. We were OK with that hospital as long as we had Spinecor. You need Dr's referral. If you don't have it it's a no go. Our Dr is not even from Montreal and would never support anything except traditional TLSO and regular x-ray, offered locally.
      Sorry for not being clear!

        MNT

This question is not related to the x-ray, so please feel to contact me directly if you like. I would like to ask why you have changed from the SpineCor brace to the Rigo-Cheneau brace. My daughter is 8 and in the SpineCor brace. She has been in it for 3-4 months. She is ok with wearing it so that is good. However, I am concerned with its ability to hold her curve as she grows and eventually hits her growth spurt. I even thought about letting her wear the SpineCor to school and wear the Cheneau brace at home/night. My daughter's curve is around 25-30 degrees with some rotation. I would very much appreciate hearing why you have made the change.

        Thank You

          EOS follow-up

Hi MNT, I wanted to just make sure that I understood about the EOS equipped facility in VA. They will do x-rays with orders from other doctors, without having to see a doctor in their practice? A few months ago I called a place in NJ that has one and they would not do imaging for non-patients because it was a state medical licensing issue or something like that. It may be different in NJ or maybe this place in VA has the correct license or desigation. I will call them myself (they are 2 hours from us) but just wanted to see if you had any further info before I do. Thanks

I don't mind sharing the reasons on the Forum since it is a good resource for all of us.We share similar stories. Our daughter was diagnosed at 7 with curvature measured at 26. We have decided to go with the brace treatment right away bur her orthopedic surgeon in our home town did not want to brace without an MRI done first. The wait for test was 3-6 months. That was one of the reasons that we opted for Montreal-they scheduled us within 2 weeks. Second was the thought that she might do well in Spinecor and the that it might be easier on a young child to have flexible brace to start with. X-ray in Montreal gave us different scenario. Although it was taken only 2 weeks after the one that measured at 26 the new one showed 34 degrees. She was braced and we were told that the reduction was 50% in brace. Unfortunately, it wasn't. She was 29 degrees in brace, quite a minimal reduction. We confronted Dr and were given explanation that really was not an answer. We kept the brace simply because she had stopped progressing. She is also checked by her local orthopedic surgeon every 6 months, only without the x-ray. He confirmed that, although he is not too happy with our choice of the brace, in her case it was working at the moment. She was also well adjusted to the brace and (same as your daughter) wore it as prescribed. We also included swimming and Schroth exercises to her daily routine.
This summer we have noticed slight lumbar rotation.
Last x-ray in Montreal done in late Fall confirmed stable thoracic curve and our concern about the lumbar one was dismissed, since they don't measure it at all.
As you know, spinecor brace does not support lumbar part at all. We felt that it is a bit nerve-wrecking to wait too long.
We had connected with many parents whose children switched the braces, both on this forum and outside. So far, we have received only positive feedback. We will be getting a new brace next month and the plan is to wear only that one.

When we called Dr Sukovitch's office and approach them with our question about having only an x-ray done at their place they told us that we were the first one with that type of the request.
I believe that it is a private practice clinic and they replied favorably to this request.
So, we don't need a Dr referral at all to do this! They will do the x-ray and put the images on the CD so we can take it to the brace specialist.
It is worth mentioning that the cost presented was reasonable.
I also found out that there will be two more EOS installed in Mid-West and West Coast. On the Biospacemed website they have made an announcement but did not share where or when. Still, the good news is-it is coming!
Mamandcrm, you are lucky to be only 2h away! Presently, we are 26h away from VA but at least the brace specialist and EOS are in the same state.

Thank you for the information MNT. I will call them next week to talk to them. I think we will do our upcoming x-ray locally again because it is an important one for her and I don't want to run into a glitch but after that I definitely would like to try the EOS imaging if they will do it.

Question for Spinecor users and others who've used EOS

Hi, can anyone who has had a child x-rayed using the EOS imager tell me in what ways it is different from a traditional x-ray machine, other than the lower dose of radiation? Meaning, how is the child positioned, are shields typically used, are they standing in a room, a smaller enclosure, etc., etc.?

                      Thanks,

EOS has a cabin like interior with the three sides walls.
The person stands and usually puts his/her hands on the wall in front of her/him. It is only one shot that does both sagittal (lateral) and full spine image.
St. Justine hospital in Montreal also shields girls ovaries.

Helpful link with detailed info-if you do it via google it opens the right page:

I just wanted to mention that Sickkids hospital in Toronto uses this low dose x-ray for the past 2 years that my son has gone there. http://www.nbgiventures.com/news-art..._Children.html
I'm not sure how easy it would be for you to go there to get your childs xrays done but might be worth investigating. I wish this option had been available before the dozens of "traditional" x-rays Patrick received
