I AM A 44 YEAR OLD MALE AND ITS HAS BEEN TWO AND A HALF MONTHS, AND ON THE ADVICE OF SOMEONE TO GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR WHO SAID HE WILL MAKE SURE MY CURVE WON'T GET ANY WORSE AND RELIEVE MY PAIN. I DO REALIZE THAT MY SPINE IS VERY TWISTED AT 60 DEGREES IN THE RIGHT THORASIC PART. HE SAYS HE KNOWS HOW TO HELP WITH HIS SPECIAL ADJUSTMENTS AND EXERCISES, I HAVE BEEN IN SUCH PAIN, AT MY NECK, LOWER BACK AND AT WHERE MY CURVE HANGS OUT ON THE RIGHT LATELY AND SOME OF THAT IS THE DEGEN ARTHRITIS IN THE LOWER SPINE, THAT I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS A GOOD IDEA OR NOT. I AM SORT OF COMMITTED FOR A WHOLE YEAR, SO I THOUGHT TRY IT, I HAVE DONE YOGA, PT SWIMMING STILL; THERE ISN'T ANYTHING ELSE TO TRY EXCEPT SURGERY. RIGHT AT THE CURVE IS SO AWKWARD. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR SOME FEEDBACK???

I don't exactly know what you mean by "it's been two and a half months" (since diagnosis? since you started with a chiropractor? since surgery?) but I did want to respond to your question about chiropractors.

I am 49 and have a slight case of scoliosis. (My son is having surgery in November which is why I am on this board.) I wasn't even diagnosed until my early 20s so my case is not even close to yours in severity. But I can tell you that my back hurts most of the time. Part of the problem is from sitting at a desk all day, but part of it is related to the curvature and the muscles that spasm because of it. I go to a chiropractor about once a month and he has helped ease my pain tremendously.

So, from personal experience I would say that a chiropractor can help with the pain. I have never heard of a chiropractor reducing/stopping a curve though. Additionally, although I trust and respect my chiropractor tremendously (when he saw my son's spine he told me to take him to an MD, so he does realize his limitations), I don't think all in the profession are trustworthy.

Another option that I have heard helps ease the pain is massage therapy.

    Good luck with your search.

        Gosh.

Two and a half months and you haven't felt any improvement? I'm sorry to hear that.

Someone I know who knows someone with scoliosis (so I can't verify that this is true) said that a "cranial sacral therapist" has been a big help. I don't fully understand what it is they do, but you can do a search on the internet and get more information. It may be worth a try.

        Good luck.

          pain relief

Hi there, Sorry to hear about your pain. If I were you I would go see a recommended surgeon, at least to monitor the progression of your curve. I had some success with Rolfing for pain relief, it is expensive, but it definitely changed my chronic lower back pain, and for the best. Good luck! Laura

            BREAKING A CONTRACT

I HAVE STOPPED THE CHIROPRACTOR AND FEEL ALOT BETTER SINCE DOING IT. I AM SWIMMING AND DOING THE YOGA FOR SCOLIOSIS WORKOUT. THE QUESTION I HAVE IS, SINCE I BROKE THE CONTRACT I HAD WITH MY CHIROPRACTOR HE IS PRO RATING ALL MY VISITS AND I NOW OWE HIM MONEY. I TOLD HIM MY DOCTOR SAID TO DISCONTINUE DUE TO MY PAIN. IS THEIR ANYTHING I CAN DO OR AM I STUCK WITH THIS BILL?

              chiropractor

This doesn't sound right to me. Is the guy a crook? It looks like a form of extortion and I think he should be reported to your state licensing board for chiropractors. I definitely wouldn't pay; it you do and it's a mistake you probably could not get the money back.

              Get an attorney if necessary.

                You should consult an attorney.

                  ATTORNEY?

EVEN THOUGH THE CONTRACT DOES SAY IT WILL BE PRO RATED IF BROKEN? IT IS ANOTHER $340.00, WHICH HE IS ASKING FOR.

                    GHD...

It's up to you. I wouldn't recommend just ignoring it. Perhaps you could offer a settlement of half the amount owed?? Just out of curiosity, can you tell us the details of the contract? That is, how many appointments did it include, and what was the difference in price per appointment by signing the contract?

                    Regards,
                    Linda

                      CONTRACT

At the start, the contract was for one year at $230.00 per month, which comes out to around $20.00-$25.00 a visit. I went for 20 visits and paid for 2 months at $460.00. When he called me and I said I couldn't continue, he said let us figure out if we owe you money or vice versa. They called back and said, on the pro rating system the 20 visits i had were $40.00 per vist for a total of $800.00, so my balance is $340.00......

Thanks GHD... hopefully your experience will help others who might get sucked into this type of contract. I know that doesn't pay your bills, but maybe it will make you feel better about it.

There is some thought that excess manipulation may be responsible for instability of the elements of the spine, making it easier for the spine to curve. If you have x-rays from before and after the treatment, maybe you should have them measured by a scoliosis specialist. If your curves have increased, that might be ammunition to get the chiropractor to back off.

                        Regards,
                        Linda

                          contract

I spoke to 2 surgeons I work with. They answered along Linda's lines.
They said if you get a letter from the surgeon who recommends surgery the chiro will probably back off. He will also probably back off if you contact your state licensing board for chiropractic.

It looks to me that the chiro is more interested in his pocketbook.
I do know that certain contracts like that in regard to healthcare are not valid/enforceable especially when the treatment itself is hurtful.

Sorry to hear about your problem with the chiropractor. As a fellow chiropractor, I'm annoyed that some people in my profession are more involved with their car payments than the suffering and concerns of the patient .The same thing happens in almost every profession, but that doesn't mean that it is alright to do. Did the contract have a clause about cancellation if no improvement is noted? It should have. As the other forum members said, speak to the state chiropractic board and get second opinions. You have the right to control your own healthcare. Good luck!

                              chiro or not

I went to my chiro weeks ago. He told me to go to hospital saying he wouldn't even touch my back. I now have slipped disk or crushed disk..along with my scoliosis of which I have had since 8th grade (curve of 32 degrees). I am sure a orthopedic specialist can give you some relief. There is also some exercises to do to relieve back pain, ask your doctor about it, the good doc.
