CASH An outright gift of cash is the most common form of financial support for our ongoing services. A check or money order should be made payable to "National Scoliosis Foundation". Everyone who makes an outright gift of $1,000 or more will be recognized as a Lifetime Member of the Foundation and will be entitled to a lifetime subscription to our Spinal Connection newsletter and special recognition in our Annual Report.
STOCK
A gift of stock or other property which has appreciated in value will provide support for the Foundation. The amount of the present fair market value of the property while possibly avoiding capital gains. Taxes that would otherwise be incurred upon your sale of the property, thereby reducing the cost of the donation to you.
For example, if you wish to donate $1,000, or any other amount, to the Foundation, you may give to the Foundation shares of stock with a market value of the amount you wish to donate. Because the Foundation has been determined by the Internal Revenue Service to be a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, you will not have to pay taxes on the difference between the cost of the stock to you and its fair market value at the time of the donation. We encourage you to speak with your tax advisor to determine your particular tax situation.
If you wish to make a donation in this manner, please send the stock certificate to us and mail separately to us a stock power, with your signature guaranteed by your bank, transferring to the National Scoliosis Foundation, Inc., the number of shares that will constitute the gift. For information concerning transfers from custody accounts or brokerage accounts, please have your broker or custodian contact the Foundation at 781-341-6333.
TESTAMENTARY GIFTS
The Foundation has established the Back Bone Society to honor persons who have demonstrated a special dedication to its mission of service to the scoliosis community through bequests in their wills or through irrevocable gifts of life insurance. You, too, can help ensure the survival of the service for future generations of patients and their families. You may also be able to create certain tax advantages for your estate. We encourage you to speak with your tax advisor to determine your particular tax situation.
A testamentary gift to the Foundation of $10,000 or more will qualify for membership in the Back Bone Society. A signed and dated statement that a gift to the Foundation of the qualifying amount is included in your will, or a copy of the page from your will, is acceptable documentation of a bequest. If you choose to make a gift of a life insurance policy, a copy of the policy indicating that the Foundation is a beneficiary for a qualifying amount is acceptable documentation.
All Back Bone Society members will be honored at the Foundation's Annual Meeting and in its Annual Report.
