recovery time

I was just wondering if there is any kind of average recovery time after surgery. I know after my 3 level fusion 3 years ago I didn't go back to work for 6 months and I had a fairly sedentary job. I could have gone back sooner but I was on disability and really wanted to make sure I was in good shape before going back to work.
now my situation is different as I am a student at a practicum and i am always lugging a ton of books around and the place I am at has no elevators so I struggle to get upstairs. Obviously could not return there.
