they can be brought in in a more constructive manner. for example, look at the very first post on here by me and your immediate response. not constructive at all...pretty demeaning actually.

I agree too. The problem is how best to respond to that reality... acceptance or fairy dust?

I apologize for any short-comings in delivery.

There is form and there is substance. When reading posts of others, I try to focus on substance but admit to have gotten hung up on form at times. But I learned from that... I try not to keep repeating that mistake.

We can aspire to be better.

i don't think acceptance is the end all be all answer, and i'm not talking about how everyone should believe in "fairy dust" and rub magical oils on their back while their scoliosis worsens.

Ouch. I just read that and you are right. It is out of character for Sharon to post something like that in response to your straightforward request for information.

She is an adult and can defend or apologize for her actions herself, but I just want to add that at that same time, on another thread, I shared with folks the disappointing news about my daughter’s experience with the SpineCor. As with Schroth and Clear, SpineCor had little in the way of independent peer reviewed literature to back it up. Nevertheless, after careful thought and deliberation, we decided to give it a try. In my daughters case, it turned out to be, I dont know the exact word to use, but xxxxxxxxxx is close (I edited the word because I don’t want to get sued). Sharon spent weeks going through the literature with me and I believe Sharon was rooting for my daughters’ success rather than rooting for her words of caution about this unproven treatment to be shown to be correct.

I guess my point is, at about the same time you made your initial post on this thread, her reply may have been wrongly swayed somewhat by the recent news of my daughter’s poor experience with another alternative treatment.

And it looks like, unfortunately, that reply set the tone for most of this thread.

Thanks for offering that CD but that's not why I wrote that. It was inappropriate, especially because MissEmmy was a new poster. I wouldn't want to discourage new people. I just get worn down... that might be a reason though it isn't an excuse. Scoliosis is already a full plate.

I am not in charge of policing woo-woo around here. That is my new mantra. I will operate that way from now on. I think I was taking on a role that was neither offered to me nor which I particularly enjoy in trying to help. But one person's "help" is another person's "attack." I get it.

Firstly - i agree, scoliosis is a difficult condition to deal with - whether we are patient or parent, and that - in and of itself - can indeed make life more interesting than would be desired. As a parent myself, i can appreciate your position.

                  Just curious ...

                  (1) what exactly is it that you consider woo-woo, fairy dust and/or pink and purple stuff?

                  (2) what exactly is it that you consider valid treatment for scoliosis?

                  (3) Do you also have scoliosis?

Thanks for writing that, mamamax. I guess each patient and each parent has to chart their own course. Folks post here for a number of reasons and those reasons don't all match with my reasons.

Anything that isn't proven or in the final throes of being proven.

Anything using a principle that has largely been discounted for good reason.

Anything that makes claims without controlled studies.

                    (2) what exactly is it that you consider valid treatment for scoliosis?
I can only go with what the experts say... watch/wait, bracing, surgery though there is growing admission that the bracing literature is a mess and we are learning that earlier surgical techniques sometimes require revision. That doesn't mean nobody avoids surgery by bracing. It just means it hasn't been shown yet. The only "unscathed" option at this point is watching/waiting and that will remain unscathed until we see enough controlled studies showing conclusively that alternative treatments work better to avoid surgery.

                    (3) Do you also have scoliosis?
Not that I know of... my kids likely have a spontaneous mutation case of some connective tissue disorder.

I doubt I have scoliosis. I do have a two-level natural fusion in my lumbar that is likely a sports injury. It appears to be propagating after being stable for several years... I can't stand for very long these days without it hurting my lower back. And I recognize that pain from when my disc was going.

I think of them as researchers who work A LOT in the field, something I can relate to from personal expereince.

I'm not in good enough shape to be a farmer.

No I'm a research scientist who logged weeks and weeks each year for several years on research vessels and spent weeks and weeks for several years out sampling other water bodies. My research requires that I do field work which is good because I am not someone who wants to stay in the lab all day.

I like field work. I like lab work. Both beat office work though that is necessary.

Oh I see... Cause when you said 'field' work, I immediately thought you might have been a farmer. I am sure you would have been an 'outstanding' farmer too.

And if you haven't caught it yet... I'm making subtle references to an old joke: How do you know farmers are good at what they do? Cause they're always outstanding in their fields.

Don't say that before you read the "elephant" thread. We have some heavy-duty "geniusry" going on there.
