  • info needed on "t-bar" surgery from 1960's

My mother had severe scoliosis when she was a teenager. She had surgery in the mid to late 1960's and has what she refers to as a "t-bar" along her spine. She was bedridden for some time and also had to wear a body cast for several months. She has had back pain all her life, which has significantly worsened over the past 10 years or so. Some time back a doctor told her she may eventually need to have the t-bar removed, but that it is considered major surgery. I trying to find information about the t-bar (I'm not even sure if that's it's clinical name), and what the possible complications are. I'd also like information on what is involved in removing the bar. My mother has seen all kinds of physicians, but none are able to help her. She just had a recurrance of an injury and received her second nerve block in three weeks. Any information at all would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Libby....

I've never heard of a T-bar. I think it's likely that your mother had a Harrington rod. If that's the case, she should be seen by a scoliosis specialist who routinely treats patients with Harrington rods. Where does your mother live?

    Regards,
