Hi, I was just told that I'll need to have surgery (75 degree curve) after a couple years of bracing - that maybe slowed the curve down - but didn't stop it. I'm worried about the pain (and lots of other things) of surgery and afterwards. Can you help?

Thanks Derek: I did read a lot of the other forum stuff and I guess I'm getting ready for surgery and my main worry is how much pain I'll have to deal with. I guess it's different for everyone and depending on the kind of surgery they do. The doctor and nurses really didn't help much with info.

pain
Using a pain specialist for a few months helped me get decent relief. I was able to sleep through the night and walk outside. He also helped me taper off. I had a very large procedure at age 60. An anterior/posterior revision and instrumentation/thoracoplasty.KarenOriginal scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

Hi AC~
Good luck with everything. A few days after Thanksgiving will be 8 years since my surgery. I was in so much pain before surgery due to my scoliosis--I had 43 and 48 degree curves before puberty. I really don't remember much right after surgery (so I can't tell you how much pain I was in), but I was ready to return to school rather quickly. I am pain free now, and SOOOOO happy with the outcome. I'd be happy to share more with you if you'd like (go ahead and email me).
Take care,
Jess

My daughter was completely off pain medication within a month of having surgery. Everyone's experience is different as is everyones pain threshold. Try not to worry too much. You may be worrying yourself over something that you find you can handle. I think the best way to deal with facing the surgery and the first few weeks of recovery is to just deal each day as it comes.
Best wishes.
Cheryl.

Thanks everybody!! I'm looking forward to surgery a little bit but I'm still rather worried. I'll keep all of your best wishes in mind and maybe that'll help. It's neat that this forum is here for all of us to be support to each other. I'll have my MRI on Oct. 5th.

Hello There!
I was braced for a few years before my operation too. Being braced will not stop you having curvature of the spine it will only slow the process of the curve down.
Anyways back to your question.. My operation was 2 months and 5 days ago and im feeling fine! For about 4 weeks after my operation i was slighty achey and very tierd but now im feeling back to my "normal" self. Of course i cant do all the activities i used to like shopping all day (i get to tierd) or street dancing.. etc but slowly i am getting there! Cant wait till i can :-)
I think the most pain i felt was when i came off my epidural which must have been about 7 days after the operation. Once the nurses had found a painkiller that would stop the pain i felt much better. The nurses said this was normal though because as you probly know all an epidural does is numbs the pain so you dont feel it but as soon as the epidural drains from your body your body stops feeling numb and starts feeling back to normal.
I am so glad i have had the operation now. I can now buy clothes that fit me perfectly and am not so self consious of the way i look.
Good Luck xx

I had surgery 12 days ago!!
Hi. My name is Ross. I had the Posterior Spinal Fusion with the insertion of a rod called a U Rod. After surgery, on a scale of 0-10, and after they start log rolling you, your pain will be like 25! At least mine was! But you have to remember it, even though at the time after the surgery you won't believe it, it does get better. Right now I am 12 days post op and my pain level, at the highest today was probably a 4. If you don't know, that's pretty good for surgery less than 2 weeks away! Well, if you have any questions, you can email me at hard_roc_child08@hotmail.com. Hope everything goes okay! Hope to hear from you and God Bless! RossMatt

Hi!
Im about 2 1/2 months post op. I was completely off the pain meds within a month of the surgery. It was very painful though. I had anterior and posterior, and my back didnt hurt at all but my side was just killing me. So if you are having anterior and posterior I believe that it is more painful but everyone is different. Good luck.
