  • News of Discombobulated

For those who've been following the highs and lows of Discombobulated's journey since revision surgery last December and know that she's been experiencing odd symptoms and spiking temps alternating with chills for some time now, though nothing could be found causing them, I received an email from her today. She saw a doctor at her local hospital three weeks ago and this is a c & p of part of her email:

Have indeed been in hosp, admitted pretty much on sight by specialist at appt. Am actually still in, but in the last few days have been allowed out / home in between IV antibiotics at 12pm & 6pm (also same antibiotics at 12am & 6am). Acute aggressive osteomyelitis has been confirmed, entry via both pressure sores that now run right to the bone (at hip joints) even though in length/width they were reducing. Some erosion of the bones at both hip joint + top of left femur + lower areas of pelvis adjoining both hip joints. BUT - they're confident that the infection hasn't reached higher up pelvis & new fusion hasn't been compromised. PHEW!!
For first week, was on horse doses of gentamycin + timentin, which got rid of the temps completely within maybe...5? days! But by the 3rd night, the nightsweats had disappeared & temps were only low - mid grade & not producing rigours. Gentamycin ceased on day 8, & flucloxicillin commenced on top of the continuing timentin maybe 2 or 3 days ago. Feeling fairly exhausted but infinitely better! Have 2 types of bacteria - a strain of staphylococcus (thankfully, NOT MRSA or VRSA) & pseudomonas. But inflammation markers continue to reduce, showing that the infection is slowly coming under control.
Working with a dietician (as always, lol) as protein is way low; a few minerals, too. Had 2 units of blood last wk as I was very anaemic & it wasn't improving. Not anaemic now, but also hoping to keep it that way.

So Michelle's battle continues, but the news could have been much worse. It sounds like she's on the mend and in her email asked me to update members here.

All the very best to Michelle!

Thanks for your well wishes for Michelle

I have emailed her the link to this thread so that if she has the time and the energy, she can read your good wishes herself. I'm sure she will be back online when she is able.

Wow.. thank you all for the well wishes. It's been such a long time since I've been online and..wow. Hope life's treating you all well

                          To update briefly...

It's looking like I'll be continuing on oral antibiotics for a while yet - "some months" on ciprofloxacin & "very many months" on flucloxicillin, on it at least until the pressure ulcers (hopefully) eventually heal. I had some problems with the transition from IV to oral meds, where the infection flared a few times, but it's been under control for a couple of weeks now, with proteins almost back to normal

Am feeling a million times better. Actually, I didn't realise how ill I'd gotten. My doc has told me a number of times it's only luck that the infection didn't kill me swiftly so...yeah.. it's gotta be all up from there lol

Thanks again for the support. Take care,
                          michelle.

Michelle-- it's SO GOOD to hear from you! I'm sorry about the infection and all you've been through and still have to go, but it's so good to know that you are on the downhill side of this ordeal and making progress. I'm so glad they (you) caught it in time! Keep us posted on the progress you're making. Sending lots of gentle cyber hugs your way and many prayers for healing... Susie
