I am attaching pics of hardware removed on 3-25-09. They cut off about 4" of the Harrington rods and removed one screw out of T3. This gives you an idea of what exactly they use to fuse. I didn't even ask for this, Dr. Floyd just gave it to me before discharging me.

Thanks Les. Very interesting. I can't help but think when I look at that, "No wonder it hurts!"

        Holy Moly!! Very interesting.

Why did you need to have these parts removed? I guess you were having pain?

I had a fracture at T3, and was having problems in that general area - swelling, pain. It had never fused there (first surgery in Apr 08, fusion T2 thru S2) and the screw was just too big.

Very cool stuff, although not the pain part.

You need to put that in a frame or something. What a conversation piece that would be!

                      hardware

WOW, les...looks so heavy...did you loose 5 pounds just from having them removed?? wonder if they are heavier than the titanium rods..? cause the heavier they are, i would guess the more uncomfortable..? No??

glad they fixed problem...sorry you went thru the pain....

do you feel less "bionic" now...

Yes the hooks are beefy and stout. I doubt that any hooks have ever broken in the past. Now screws and rods are a different story.

                        Jess
I did some rough calculations on a T2-pelvic fusion with about 34 screws and 2 rods and I remember that it came out to approx 14ounces. Weight is not a consideration. Its in one of my posts, about 6 months ago.

Clamps and screws are used for different reasons. The holding power of a clamp is substantial. They can bother some people, I wouldn't know as I'm totally screwed. LOL No clamps or cross members in my construct.

Hopefully, I will never see any of MY hardware due to a revision surgery. I've had enough surgeries that my odds are nil of that happening.

Wow, you must have had pain up very high? T3 is way up there. How long did the pain go on before they decided to go back in?

The removed hardware weighed 1.6 oz or or 46 g. I didn't lose any weight (I've gained, but think my thyroid is acting up as well as my eating habits), and I didn't gain any height!

I basically had pain within three months after the first surgery (Apr 08), so Jul 08, I was complaining of pain. He removed the clamp that held both rods together in Nov 08. And I was still complaining of pain, he was "observing." I called as soon as I had that excruciating pain for two nights. For the first time after both of the surgeries I wanted to cry from the pain and go to the ER. When I told him that, he ordered CT scans, myelograms, and then scheduled the revision surgery, which was Mar 09. I think he "observed," wanting to make sure fusion was complete before going back in. I still have some discomfort, but it's usually because I've done something I shouldn't. And my body is protesting loudly. I try hard to pay attention to what my body says, I sure don't want it screaming at me!

Wow, I am having a broken rod replaced with a different material (well, both rods will be replaced), and I was wondering if anyone had ever gotten their hardware afterwards! I am really hoping to get a least a piece of mine.
