  • Can't get help

I have had scoliosis since i was in Jr. High and have never been able to get a doctor to do anything. Now I am 30 and had to quit my job due to the paid and I still can not get a doctor to help me.
I do not have any insurance and have had to go to the local charity hospital recently. The doctors there say I am too young to have this much back pain and gave me medicine that cost $300.00 which I did not have. If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated. I am just starting to learn about scoliosis. Any information would be appreciated.

I complained to my doctor (or rather nurse practitioner) about my hips and shoulders appearing uneven and lower back pain. She suggested I see a chiropractor. I was hesitant and my husband was against it (he thinks chiropractors are quacks) but I gave it a try because my back hurt so much. An x-ray showed that I had an s-shaped curve and the chiropractor recommended a treatment plan. I started off going 3 times a week for the first 2 weeks or so then 2 times a week, until I was down to once every 2 weeks. I noticed an improvement in the back pain after the first week and would say I was completely pain free after the first month. He took another x-ray after 3 months but the curves didn't show any improvement. I moved about a month later and stopped going. A few months later the pain gradually started to come back. I should really start going again because I can live with the curve but the pain really wears you down after awhile. I don't know what area you live in but most chiropractors have fairly reasonable prices and they're cheaper than orthopedists. Some will even work out a payment plan with you especially during the first couple months when you have to go so often. Best of luck to you.

One possiblity that you could try is apply for Disability. If you apply and do not have a doctor then they will send you to their own private doctors. Once they agree that you have scoliosis and that it disables you (hence your having to quit work) to the point of not being able to keep a job, then they will give financial help and best of all HEALTH INSURANCE!! Many times even if they will not give you financial benefits they will just give you health insurance because you are low income. It may not help you immediately for the pain but it has possibilities for the future.

        can't get help

Chiropractic might relieve some pain for awhile but will never stop the curves from progression.

For help I suggest you might contact a local university teaching hospital and consult their spine/scoliosis clinic. You might be able to get charity care. If that doesn't work try a neighboring state university clinic. Visiting an orthopedist who does not specialize in adult scoliosis is a waste of time.

Feel free to e-mail me privately and let me know how you make out.

            Patricia,
Since you stated that you no longer work and have no insurance, perhaps you should now look into your state's Medicaid program. If you qualify, you would have insurance for both a doctor and your medications.
            Good luck
