  • Go Emmy!

Hi Emmy! I am so excited for you. What a wonderful trip it sounds like and i hope you will keep us posted on all your success. I know about that "good kind" of sore you were talking about, i've experienced that too. When i tried to describe it to a friend she said - oh, that's corrective pain - like when one wears braces on their teeth. Had to agree with her (only i think the teeth thing is not so comforting). I have not had your intensive training but the few exercises i have learned to do feel much like you describe .. feels kind of like a retraining of posture involving muscles and spine. You explain it much better than me. Oh - and i did purchase that book, thanks for the tip.

Dr. Moramarco sounds fantastic .. i'm a little envious of the DVD and photos ya know, that's pretty impressive (i only have photos of other people, but it's ok - they are better looking than me). Boy are you right about scoliosis being a life long challenge and i'd have to say that 30 minutes a day is a small price to pay for excellent results - which are sometimes measured in the smallest ways .. like being able to do just every day things pain free. A lot of recognition for Schroth in Europe for just those reasons - glad we're catching on over here (any cost paling in comparison to the remedy).

You had said earlier: The main points of Schroth for adults are improved breathing, improved posture, reduced pain, and having a sense of empowerment over your scoliosis rather than letting your scoliosis control you (i.e. working out the musculature surrounding your spine in a particular way so that it supports your spine more effortlessly). As you know my brace (of a different color) is designed to do much the same thing - along with the few Schroth exercises i do - i can definitely vouch for the fact that this does leave one with a sense of empowerment over the condition vs the other way around .. great feeling isn't it?

Wow .. good for you. Look forward to our futures!

    • Hi from a newbie here!

This thread has made for some very interesting reading!

I just wanted to chime in and add that I will be taking my 13 yo daughter to the Scoliosis Rehab Center in WI this June for two weeks. Her orthopedic is the person who recommended it to us, and we are thrilled to have his complete support.

If you'd like more details, I have a blog about her scoliosis and our journey so far, which I plan on keeping up with while in WI. If anyone is interested in reading it, please pm me and I'll send you the link.

Welcome! Wow, that's awesome that your orthopedic actually recommended it! What type/degree of curve(s) does your daughter have? I wish her the best of luck in June! Definitely keep us posted. I'm going to PM you about the scoliosis blog link...

          • Welcome SLS! I also think it is wonderful that our orthopedic specialists are understanding the cutting edge of non surgical treatments (mine recommended the doctor now providing my Spinecor brace - and i also use Schroth exercises). All the very best to your daughter & hope you will keep us posted - send me the blog too??

            • Hi again. I have a bit more time, so here's more info. My 13 y/o daughter was diagnosed last August. She has been in a Providence Brace since last October. There has been no change at all, which is good. Her stats are:

              Thoracic Curve Degree:

              T5 - 11 = 31%

              T11 - L4 = 44%

              Lumbar Curve Degree:

              L4 - S1 = 27%

              Alignment:

4.5 to 6 cm off center

Her Risser score is a 4.

Her orthopedic recommended the Scoliosis Rehab Center to us at her last visit. He considers surgery to always be the very last resort and feels Schroth Therapy could be beneficial. They were so encouraged at the clinic that an actual medial doctor recommended them, they are coming to Michigan to visit with him later this month! We are the third family visiting the center that he made the recommendation to. What I really appreciate, is that he really stands apart from his colleagues, as he told me, most don't agree with him, as they feel that surgery is the way to go. He disagrees and I appreciate that.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned insurance. We have BCBS PPO in Michigan and the center in Stevens Point is actually a provider. They are going to cover 80% after my deductible is met (which it already is) with a max. of $1,000.00 out of pocket expenses, then they cover at 100%. We're going to drive there (10 hours) and they hotel is giving us a great rate, so the expenses are not really that bad. Of course, we don't have a "spare" thousand dollars, but I am confident every penny spent will be well worth it.

Again, if anyone wants my blog address, I am happy to share.

              • Hi SLS...

I think your daughter would not be considered to be in the range of accepted surgical curvature rates. The 44 degree measurement is a red herring, in that S curves are not typically measured using both curves.

Is it possible that this orthopaedist is just responding to your need to do something (as opposed to doing nothing)?

Also, do you mind if I ask if this orthopaedist is a member of the Scoliosis Research Society? You can find a list of members here:

                http://www.srs.org/find/

                Thanks.

                Regards,
                Linda

I have not asked him to do anything. I have complete trust in him and highly respect his position. He is here for me (my daughter, actually), and we are responding to him.

Thanks. You're in good hands. I know Dr. Mendelow, and trust that he's got your best interest at heart. I'll be anxious to hear his thoughts on the subject.

                    • Linda,
We're not in good hands, we're in excellent hands!

I am very excited about the therapist's visit from the Scoliosis Rehab Center with him later this month. I hope he is able to pave the way for other orthopedics, or at the very least, widen their thought process a bit!

Yes, definitely keep us posted on the visit! I'll be interested to hear what your Dr. thinks of the therapist from Scoliosis Rehab.

                        • Got the Blog address SLS - wow ... that is truly nicely done!! Thank you. Will follow. Exciting what is happening with Schroth and how the medical community is recognizing the benefits.

                          • Wow - I guess I'm replying to a few of you here... I'm not someone who posts much on forums or groups or anything and wasn't aware that the etiquette could be so tricky - just as a few of you suggested I did a search for what was of interest to me an spent a little session replying to those posts - I guess I made 7 posts. Is that weird in some way? This is my first time back since and it's kind of strange to see that my behavior is somehow suspect.

I'm not "affiliated" with Schroth in any way except that I'm happy and relieved that it's working for my daughter - and so I'm pretty darn enthusiastic! If the suspicion is that I'm not real because I'm saying great things about Dr. Moramarco I'm not sure what to do about that - I say these things because I mean them. I don't work for him or anything like that - I don't even live in the same state! If anyone wants to email me directly you're welcome to - you can even call me.

Also - if you have more questions about my daughter's treatment please feel free to ask - like I said, I'm excited about how it's going and happy to talk.

I suppose the 'tell' would be if she ever comes back, but I also suppose that with my questioning attitude about her legitimacy, maybe she wouldnt come back even if she were legit. So perhaps I goofed. But I wanted to take the op to point it out to Mamamax (because to me at least it seemed pretty clear what was happening)
Hi Concerned Dad - I'm back - and I'm real! I just made another post where I went into more detail about that - not sure what to do to alleviate your doubts - thought at least I'd try replying directly to you though I'm new to this and may not be doing it right! I only come on occasionally and not sure why seven posts is suspicious - I kind of got into it, is all. Let me know if you have any questions for me.

You asked about costs and by now it looks like you probably have enough information on that. But let me know if you want more...

                              • welcome to the forum emsmom.

Did you happen to read this thread that you resurrected?

I was always curious what the story was about the theft of Pam's xrays.

I'm sorry, but your post there in particular struck me as random relative to the thread discussion.

Anyway, glad to hear it seems to be working for Em.
