I was looking at a (IMHO) loony alternative health forum and found the following explanation for why I might have infantile idiopathic scoliosis:

"If she's had the scoliosis since birth, then she came in with some heavy-duty past life stuff having to do with spirituality and sexuality, or a major injury, that carried over......most definitely connected. There's some karma there left over that wasn't cleared so much so that it manifested physically. This is not the kind of physical issue that bad nutrition causes, afer all!"

    Um......suuuuuuuuuuuure

Patty, I had AIS as a child and all went well as a kid with bracing etc. Then I was in an accident 10 years ago and my Scoliosis started as if it was brand new. I cannot get surgery and I know the frustration. Without my brace my limber spine twists and turns and effects nerves and brain function. I am waiting for new advances in tech. Thus my screen name.

          maybe?

My grandpa and his dad have one vertebrae that is partially missing. And then my mom has a congenital deformity of one hand. Plus, she had problems with her hips and feet (fixed when she was a baby). So, maybe this had somthing to do with my scoliosis onset. I have been told it is ideopathic.
          Diagnosed in '06'
Wore TLSO brace for 18 mo.
Upper curve 40 degrees; lower 35 degrees
          Surgery in March '08' (T6 - T11)
Rods for 7 vertabraes; 3 fused
Still have lumbar curve (T12 - L4) of now, 33 degrees
I have osteoarthritis, 3 bulging discs, stenosis, fast progressing lordosis, vertebrea twisting (vertebreas almost on side) all in lumbar spine. Will most likely have another surgery to extend rods and fusion. :'(

David Allen Grier is another that deserves credit. I guess to be that good, you have to be insane. There isn't all that much online with Grier, the In Living Color box set has all of it. It took me a month to go through all of it,all the seasons, and all for 60 seconds of genius, comedic acting.

That Wanda character is too much LOL Jamie Fox's launching platform!!!! LMAO Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

Hi DD, this topic is great, I really don't have much of a family history as I only know 1/4 of my family, but my mother told me that when I was a baby, I was very late in being able to sit up on my own, so she brought me to the doctor and was told that I had scoliosis. She also said that I wore the same size clothing for about three years and was very small for my age. But, I did have a sudden growth, I think probably around 11 or 12 years old, now I'm 5'6" (actually I lost about 2" now due my spine curve).

My mom believes my scoliosis, my hydrocephalus, and every single thing that's ever been wrong with me (including stuff I've torn up myself - and I'm dead serious) is her fault because she "had me when she was too old".

She was a positively *archaic* 34 years old. ROFL!

I have to admit when I first saw this thread I went "ugh", worried people would really believe some of the off the wall reasons. There are still people out there who believe slouching and heavy bags cause scoliosis (not to mention the bizarre myriad of reasons some chiropractors tout). It has actually been rather entertaining to read some of the old wives' tales and pure ignorant conjecture that some of our parents STILL believe because they don't know what we know.

And, of course, every time Ed says "hold your belly button" I have to laugh at the visual ;-).

                    Regards,
                    Pam

                      Why me??? Scoliosis--what caused it???

One can go nuts trying to find the "reason" for scoliosis--as if it could turn back the clock!!!!

Finding the "reason" and there seems to be many---genetics included(as in my case) does not solve the problem at hand!!!!. Looking for reasons is a way to avoid dealing with the real problem and can take up a lot of energy--as the curve relentlessly progresses.

I had an old form of scoliosis surgery ----almost 53 years ago. I served me very well most of that time. And I had a very successful revision 6 years ago.
Wished I had done it sooner.

And, yes parents, my mother was terrified to put a "healthy" child to surgery. And now I am there for her--she is 92.
                      Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

I remember those trucks going up and down the streets when I was about 5 or 6 yrs.old. We would try to get in the fog. Also the planes would fly real low and cover everything.

I definitely think the sinning has something to do with it. LOL

I am a 55 yr old female with a pronounced S curve. I have led an active life, (up until lately when all I want to do after an exausting day at work are the bare essentials, cook, eat, TV, sleep) I had a rapid growth as a child, reaching 5'10" by the time I was 14, and then stopped at 5'11" by age 17. I rode horses until I was in my early thirties, and have often wondered if all those times I fell off...hard on the ground, if that didn't exacerbate the problem with my scoliosis. And as a child (of about 5 or 6) I remember swinging on the shower curtain bar and falling on the edge of the tub on my back. But, the truth is, even though those accumulative events MAY have contributed to my current condition, I am reminded that my sister, as well as several female cousins also have scoliosis to varying degrees. When we were growing up in the 50's and 60's, the education about scoliosis wasn't adequate. No one mentioned wearing a brace when I was a teenager. (Wish they had!) My first real awareness of having physical limitations was when I was unable to do a tumbling exercise like the rest of the girls in gym class. My back and neck wouldn't tolerate being rolled forward into a ball. I remember complaining, but the gym teacher just thought I didn't want to do the exercise. The world is changing though, thank goodness. One of my wishes is that women (or men) who have scoliosis, and are in a position that kids look up to, (actors, singers, sports champs etc.) would do some public service announcements. Create awareness. That's what we didn't have when I was growing up. Great question DD, got me thinking

We followed the fogging truck down the street too, getting the spray on us, thinking that was great fun... That would have been in the mid 1950s, out in California where I lived at the time. I bet it was DDT. What idiots!

Tinkerbell-- mine wasn't noticed either (by anyone who could have done something about it) and I know I had a horrible time with forward rolls... I hadn't really connected it till you just wrote that. And maybe in my case it doesn't really apply, but it makes sense to me. As for wishing something could have been done earlier, I am glad I went unnoticed by the medical profession during that time. Things have come a long way with scoliosis treatment and spinal fusion surgery in the last 40 years.
