That being said, I know it has helped me. I can clearly see that my rib cage does not have just one rib protruding like it did and my waistline is more even.. I no longer get tired just from standing for a while. It may be temporary - but, I'm not stopping. Even if it is an exercise routine I must do everyday forever, I am very willing to do it. I plan to continue adding reps and weight to my stretching routine... My spine is deformed and I can only assume if I stop, it will return back to is naturally very cuvey state.. It is not a cure - but it may be a helpful treatment. Everyone's spine is curved for different reasons and for some, doing weight bearing exercises while stretched out might even cause a problem - so everyone must check with a doc. Even, if this works for just a few it is worth telling others.. Since the there is no single cause, we cannot expect that the same thing will be helpful to everyone.

I personally don't think hanging alone does a whole lot - I believe it is best to stretch and strengthen. In addition to the door bar, I also use the Weider total body works gym - I pull my self up to the top 30 times (with the bed inclined as high as it goes.) This is very difficult but it gets easier and easier. I am literally stretching my back a GREAT DEAL - so make sure your doc is ok with this before trying it yourself. (my spine has no bulging disc, fractures, etc - it was just very S shaped - "moderate".) I do no twisting during the weight-bearing stretches.

I agree with another poster - there is no money in this for researchers. But, thanks to forums, we can post what personally brings us some relief.
Hi djean1 :-) Your note on the Weider equipment caught my eye. Is this the same principle as the Total Gym (advertised by Norris and Brinkley)? I actually have one (Total Gym) and was happy with what it did for me using my own body weight - maybe time to dust it off and actually use it again! I used it on the highest level also - after working into that on a gradient. Felt a lot better those days .... hmmmmm. Thanks for the reminder and glad you are finding benefit from what you do - best wishes for continued relief.

        WARNING ABOUT HANGING BARS!

A few minutes ago I was playing around on the hanging bar that we just put up between our door frame. I'm fairly tall so we put it up high and I got a five gallon paint can and turned it upside down so I could step up to the bar. Got my left leg over and then my right and then CRASH! I fell into the paint can and landed on my lower neck and upper back and boy it hurts like HELL! Immediate pain and instant headache. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE BAR IS FASTENED CORRECTLY! My husband suggests adding wooden bracket supports beneath the bars. I am just SO BLOODY glad it was me who fell and not my scolio boy. I am so sore and I'm going to feel worse tomorrow I'm sure.

Thanks Jess. I'm fine but really sore and I KNOW I will feel worse tomorrow and I work Thursday -Monday and my job is a little bit physical so I'll have to load up on some Tylenol or something else. I can feel everything puffing up like a goose egg like I've been in a crash. I bet there's a big bumpy blue bruise on my back tomorrow. That's a lot of 'b'!

I think the hanging bar is a great idea and as a kid I hung upside down a lot and when I met my husband at nineteen, I was always standing on my head all over my apartment b/c it felt so good and my spine is pretty normal. Even as a kid I wouldn't sit in a chair, I'd lie on the floor and put my legs on the chair cushion. I was always crawling around the floor and hanging about.

It comes down to basic engineering and obviously my weight couldn't support the hanging bar. I'm going to reinforce my bar and get back on it.

The title of this thread was fine with me before but now I'm thinking that maybe as some suggested it isn't the best, but not b/c of its claim (fun) to a cure but more but b/c I wouldn't want any scolio people to throw a bar up between their doorway. Like I said, I am SO glad it wasn't my son who crashed b/c he already has a bit of daily pain.

Ouch! Eliza that looks so painful. But it could have been much worse. Good warning there, to be sure the bar is absolutely secure. I hope you're not too bad tomorrow.

I was a bit like you as a kid, I loved hanging upside down. The monkeybars at school in NZ were my favourite pastime. We lived near the school and I'd wander over there on weekends and after school to have a swing and a "hang." Couldn't do that these days, I suppose the grounds are all locked up. In fact, I don't think monkeybars even exist any more - too much of a danger to our kids.

Or too much danger to parents? LOL.

Well I am definitely more sore this morning and I have a lovely goose egg on my head as well. My husband said my back scrape/bruise looks a lot like the big red rock in Australia. All in all I feel as though I've been kicked by a horse. I don't remember the last time I did something so dumb and I think that's what hurts the most.

                        Good morning Uluru.
Haha, good one. I had to look that one up, lol.

I was so stiff and sore this morning and could barely turn my neck but managed to get through the day at work with plenty of Tylenol and a hot corn bag which I left at work, arrggg.

My son was actually hanging from the bar before me but it was much lower without a problem but of course I had to raise the bar b/c I wanted my arms to dangle and of course I'm at least fifteen pounds heavier than him so there lies the problem.

I do think it's still a great idea and we've had this bar around for years but it was mainly used by my older son to do chin-ups not hanging exercises and it's much safer that way b/c if it does release then at least you fall on your feet, not your head and back.

My younger son felt so bad for me that while the bar was dropping, he put his hand between the bar and the doorway to try to stop it and his hand got squished and he's got a couple of nasty pinch marks. When I fell, he immediately ran upstairs and grabbed a huge ice pack from the freezer and smacked it on my back. Double ouch.

Yes, what would we do around this crazy house without a sense of humour. Funny thing is, most of the jokes seem to be on me. Hmmm.

Turns out, the doorway we put the tension bar on wasn't actually a proper doorjamb (sp?) and was more of a pass through door which didn't have the proper framing which meant it bowed when the tension got too tight. We are going to put the bar up in our son's doorway which has a real doorjamb with a door and all and will add additional safety brackets so I, errr, I mean my son can start hanging upside down again. We'll throw some soft pillows on the floor as well just in case.

Feeling a lot better today but did end work a little earlier b/c I was starting to hurt all over again. Will finish up what I didn't get done today tomorrow.

Just a little update, we've moved the bar upstairs to a proper doorjamb, lowered it somewhat and added the down pillows on the floor just in case.

My son has been hanging on and off all day for a few moments at a time and he has given me two thumbs up that it feels really good on his back. He said he'd hang upside down longer but it does kinda hurt the back of his knees. I'm thinking some nice foam wrapped around the bar might be a good idea.

I am staying away from the bar for a bit longer b/c, well, just b/c.
