  • Update on Carolyn

I don't post all that often. Not really much to post on.

We had our last appointment before the pre-op one that will be in Feb.

Her lower curve is now in the 50 degree range (which had been the lesser of the 2) and her upper curve is still in the 40 degree range.

We have her surgery scheduled for March 9.

I just have to get organized before then. I've been trying to catch up and have been reading through the posts.

    Hi, Becky.

I'm fairly new to the board--trying to learn as much as I can.

I do hope things go well for Carolyn. Please do keep us posted as you know we are here for you!

    Take care,
    Marian

Thanks. I think her story is on here somewhere.

Quick version is 6th grade regular doctor noticed a curve, 7th grade sent to specialist found out her upper curve was about 42 degrees, lower curve was in the low 30's. Didn't worry about the lower one as the upper one was the big one.

We went to Shriner's and she was braced, told surgery possible but we would give bracing a shot first. She was doing well for a while but then the curve started progressing. July of this year the upper curve was 48 degrees so we were told we could chuck the brace and basically it was time to look at surgery. She had one more appointment set up for Dec. where we were told, it was *possible* they could change their minds (we knew they wouldn't!). The estimate time for surgery was Feb. back in July. I called in August and got a date set-up and all that jazz.

I wasn't expecting the lower curve though to now be in the 50 degree department, it was the one we really didn't worry about regarding bracing, etc... and it got worse than the upper one that we braced for. So I don't know if the bracing actually helped the upper one stay a smaller curve or if it just was the way it was going to go.

The nice part at least with having a date is it's not this big ???? everywhere. I have already talked to the school and it was hard with the "we don't know the date but at some point she will be having surgery". They estimate it will be 4 - 6 weeks she will be out of school but it really is all dependant on how she feels. I have to call today and give them the definite date along with the fax number they need to send them the paperwork stuff.
