  • Drs. Lenke or Bridwell- any experiences?

I have decided to get a second opinion about the progress of my kyphosis. I have Schuermann's disease, fused T3-L2, and the curve is now in the very upper part of my spine. I have lost the 3 inches I gained from my first sugery, one inch in the last 2 years. My doc told me he would not operate because it would not "enhance the quality" of my life and would limit my motion further. I cannot imagine that this is as good as I will be, and that it will only get worse from here. I am in a ton of pain, and my neck is just awful. I can't imagine living this way for the rest of my life. I'm only 41, and that is a lot of years for my progression to get worse. I have been doing research, and it seems that both of these docs have some experience with kyphosis. I know some of you have seen Lenke, and I wondered if anyone has seen Bridwell. (Both are in St. Louis.) I live near Indianapolis, so the drive isn't unreasonable if I can find someone who has experience with this, as opposed to mostly scoliosis experience.

    Thanks!

I saw Dr. Bridwell for a consult in September 2006. I have since decided on a surgeon closer to home in Chicago. However, if I required a complex revision surgery, I would have the utmost confidence in either Drs. Bridwell or Lenke. I believe they are two of the best revision specialists in the country.

You are young enough to find someone

      Hi,
I have severe scoliosis and postural kyphosis (sp). My thoracic curve is 125 degrees and stiff. But I am 69 years old, very deformed with pulmonary deficiencies and have not had any luck in finding a surgeon who is willing to operate on me . I don't have pain, --that is part of the reason I have been refused--and my age and curve makes me too high risk for all of the surgeons I have consulted. Please find someone before you are considered "too old". I would give so much to have a partial correction. Keep looking. You might try Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. You have pain and doctors do take that into consideration. There are 2 good surgeons there: Dr Ondra, a neurosurgeon who is a spinal specialist and Dr. Schafer, with whom I've never seen. But maybe I will. Best of luck.

        Hello

I saw Dr. Lenke and I am not sure but it seems like he doesn't do the neck. You may want to go look at Dr. Hey's website and note some instrumentation that goes all the way to the skull!

Sure Hope You Can Get Some Help!
        Regards,
        Chris

Would you mind telling me who your doctor is? Do you know anyone in the Chicago area who does a lot of revision work?

          Thanks.

I am having sugery with dr. Lenke this summer for my kyphoscoliosis. I think it would at least be worth it to at least go see what he has to say.

              Dear Badback,

My surgeon is Dr. Purnendu Gupta at the University of Chicago Medical Center. I know he does revisions because there was a post here from about a year ago from a young lady who had a successful revision by him (I think her name was Sarah). I also had some correspondence from a 45-year-old nurse from Indiana who was at the end of her rope until she met with Dr. Gupta. She met with nine surgeons who did not want to treat her before seeing Dr. Gupta who gave her hope and performed her revision surgery.

There are excellent surgeons at Rush. SusieBee had a great outcome by Dr. Hammerberg, but I don’t know to what extent their surgeons perform revisions.

My hunch though is that Dr. Michael Schafer at Northwestern is probably the most experienced at revision surgery. This doctor has a long career and at age 66 is still practicing. I know two women from my support group who had very complex surgeries performed by him.

              Good luck with your search.

              Chris
