  • Spinecor for over 45 degree curve

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had success with a spinecor brace for curves over 45. My 13 year old son has a curvature of 48T 43L. He is currently in a boston brace, which isn't holding his curves which increased 6 degrees in 3 months. After visiting 4 surgeons it seems like surgery is the best option, but I don't want to leave any stone unturned.
    Thanks!

    Hi:

Dr. Rivard in Montreal (one of the inventors of the Spinecor brace) will prescribe the brace for curves up to 50 degrees. Our daughter has curves about 50 degrees and he agreed to let her try it. He only gave it a 15% chance of working for her but we wanted to try it because we don't want her to have the surgery. She is also having Rolfing treatments. These treatments make her back look and feel straighter - her posture is much improved by these treatments.

We don't know yet whether this will work for Esme but we are hoping it will.

Another brace to look at for large curves is the Cheneau.

Good luck. Please let us know what you decide.

      Is SpineCor good for adults?

      Hi.
Have you heard if Spinecor can be used for aults with scoliosis? I was first diagnosed w/ 45 degree curvature at 19 yrs. which was too late for a brace. The surgeon took a wait-and-see approach to surgery. I may need spinal fusion in the next few years and would rather wear a brace if it could help. Any info would be great.

Yes Spinecor is being used by adults - especially for the relief of pain.

The attached recent MacLeans magazine article talks about this.......

          SpineCor for Adults

Is there a long wait to see a specialist to get fitted for a SpineCor brace in Montreal? Can a rheumatologist prescribe one? Does it have to be a scoliosis specialist?

Are you sure there is a long wait in Montreal. I know they will be out of the Country the 3rd week of February, but I had not had to wait before to see them. They are getting very busy however so that may be changing.

I would be careful who you go see, If I were to venture outside of the docs in Montreal I would at least call there and see if they can recomend a doctor they feel comfortable. I have also experienced that my insurance gave my better coverage with an ortho vs a chiro not sure if it would me the same as with a rumetologist (sp?)

              Waiting list

Hi. I am on a waiting list for an adult scoliosis specialist in Montreal. Unfortunately the only orthopedic surgeon treating adults also treats children. As a result, he can only see adults one day per month at the Montreal General hospital. I sent Dr.Rivard and Dr. Coillard e-mails and am waiting for their response. Do you know if they accept adult patients?
I am very happy that your daughter is improving. I only wish my parents and doctors could have been as perceptive of my condition prior to puberty. My scoliosis was only detected officially by my doctor @ 19. My doctor wanted to do spinal fusion. The second opinion advised the wait and see approach. I would prefer to see an orthopedic surgeon and not a chiropractor. I would appreciate any info. Thanks

I do not know if they are seeing adult patients however I remember a conversation with Dr Rivard at one point about using the brace for pain management. I beleive he is all for it as long as the adult paitient knows that is will most likley not give much correction. .

If you have a call or e mail in to them they will most likely call soon. Keep in mind they will be out of the office for the 3rd week of Feb. So you may not get a call back till after that. Both Doctors are every good about returning correspondence.
