    Sarah,

Nicole has all kinds of itching and different sensations at various times. It is all normal. When you think of what was done to your back during surgery, it all makes sense. Congrats on the driving. Be careful. Drive safely.

      Sarah,

The numbness - and itch you can't seem to reach - is common for pretty much any surgery. I have numb spots on both my knee and ankle from reconstruction - and phantom itching at times. Initially, it's just nerves trying to heal.

I get the same sensation around the site of several rhizotomies (medial branch nerves zapped around my left trapezoid).

The daily theatrics did cease (some) at my knee and ankle sites - with time. My medial branch nerves are probably permanently confused.

Hopefully it'll quit hassling you soon!

      Regards,
      Pam

        Sarah,

I have numbness between my shoulder blades too, but I think it's improving over time. I was getting the itchies a lot when I was taking the painkiller, it's pretty common side effect of medications.

I've started driving too, but I find it pretty scary not being able to twist to see my blind spots!

        Good luck!

I have itching, but mostly where there was any type of adhesive or tape. With a 22 inch incision you a can imagine how many steri strips there were! I think I have finally gotten all of the left over adhesive off of my skin. It turns out I was allergic to the adhesive and developed a slight rash where ever it touched. The itching is lessening as the last of the rash is going away, but when it kicks in I take a benadryl (I imagine any antihistamine would work) and that seems to control it.

Most of my back is numb, with the sensation going around my sides and on to my ribs in the front. Different areas are more numb than others. My 15 year old daughter likes to touch me in spots that are really numb just to see if I can feel it. She gets a real kick out of it when she finds spots where I can't feel anything and she keeps poking and asking "can you feel that? How about that?"

            Maddening itch

I had that during the healing process. It's the nerves coming alive again in stages. Tylenol really helps with it.

My revision surgery was very extensive so I had a lot of it off and on for several months. A TENS machine works too.

Now that the rash is gone I have discovered that the itching is getting worse. It really kicks in whenever I shower and use the long handled mesh spongy thing on my back. I must be stimulating the nerves and really setting them off. It almost feels like a whole colony of ants has been set loose on my back. It takes about a half an hour or so for it to settle down, but if I scratch it at all it just intensifies and sets off a whole new wave of itching. I figure that it must be a good thing that the itching is taking place because it means there is healing in the nerves. I just hope it finishes soon because it really is driving me crazy. I have noticed that there is more feeling in my back now so I will keep using the spongy thing and stimulating those nerves to try and get all of the regeneration over with.

                I thought I could take it but I can't!

Okay...so when does this insane itching stop? Now i know why everyone just lets the water run down their back during a shower instead of soaping up. The soaping up just sets off more itching! Now I have it on my ribcage as well as my back. Does it ever end? Any ideas on how to make it go away?
