      schroth

We just completed a week of intensive Schroth therapy at the Scoliosis Rehab in Steven's Point, WI. We paid out of pocket since insurance didn't accept out of network providers. If you have an option to go out of network it should be covered under Physical therapy.

We had a very positive experience, she worked for 4 hours a day. Two hours in the morning and two hours in the early afternoon.

Ambrea learned how to correct her spine with elongation and traction. Re learning basic mechanics. They taught her to avoid twisting or extra turning as that can increase the torc of the spine.

They measured her air input and lung function, measured height. She also learned rotational breathing, and isometric exercises to help strengthen the weaker areas and breathing exercises to open constricted areas.

At the end of the week her posture improved greatly, but it is not the end of her journey ....its the beginning. It is an investment. My husband built the bars and we put up mirrors in our sun-room. For thirty minutes a day she does the lengthening and coordination exercises. This helps retrain her brain in preconception.

We were going to get a spinecor brace..schroth prefers rigo cheneau. The therapist reccomended that one over all. the cost of the brace is $6000 at this time. mmm wonder if insurance covers it?

We have a researcher here who did his doctorate in the field of muscle physiology and had torso rotation for scoliosis as his dissertation topic. I am going to ask him if he knew Schroth was telling people not to do twisting/turning.

the cost of the brace is $6000 at this time. mmm wonder if insurance covers it?
That is simply astounding. Why is it so expensive? Supply and demand?

That brace is approximately equivalent to other hard braces in terms of measuring and fitting. I can say my daughter's brace was ~$3400 near as I can remember.

That price is outrageous FULL STOP.

        I hope others comment.

ETA: Others have mentioned hard braces in the $3000 - $4000 range. I have not read a testimonial that includes a cost even close to $6000.

          Hi bigbluefrog,

The RC is expensive but not near that expensive where we go, at Orthotic Solutions in VA. There, without any insurance chipping in, I think it is about $4500, brace with any follow-ups or adjustments as necessary included in that. If you can get some reimbursement or you happen to be in network with them, much less expensive than that. I believe they are in network only with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, but you would have to check that. Regardless, your insurance should cover some part of it, only if up to what the allowance is for a standard, more off the rack brace. The RC is a custom brace, so there is more involved in the fabrication than with a Providence or a Boston (which my understanding is typically are more standardized from the manufacturer (with some adjustments), but not always, they can be completely custom too). Hope that helps.

I'm so glad you shared your experience with us :-) Good also to know about the out of network insurance coverage. 30 minutes a day is a small investment for exercise that will hopefully prove beneficial. Will they want you back for follow up at some point? I'm impressed that lung function was measured and taken into consideration. Sounds like a very positive experience & wishing you all the very best!

We are all in shock from the news as I'm sure everyone can relate to, but after many tears, I realize I now need to start doing research to find out what all our options are. We met with our first orthopedist last week who said the treatment for over 40 degrees is surgery and that was scary. We have appts with two orthopedic surgeon specialists later this month, but would also like to explore non-surgical options, especially before deciding on surgery. I am interested in the scroth therapy mentioned in this message thread, in addition to other exercise, stretching or brace options. Lauren is a competitive swimmer, swimming 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week, so the thought of surgery is very concerning since it would greatly impact her life. I'm also curious if any of her swim strokes could actually "hurt" this situation? I've read somewhere that breaststroke may be bad for scoliosis. Does anyone know? We live in San Diego. If anyone has schroth or physical therapist specialists that they recommend, even if they are not in our area, we'd appreciate it. We'll take any advice you're willing to share.
              Thank you,
              Jackie
Hi Jackie, I am 44 and have the same curves but opposite T & L. My surgeon actually does not recommend surgery due to degeneration above and below the fuse in time. I have been doing Pilates for scoliosis, yoga, etc, for a year and I am not in pain any more. I am on the adult forum a lot also. I would like to see Luke and try Scroth (I just purchased Crista's book 3D Treatment for Scoliosis), but in the meantime I just found this book which looks VERY good: Curves, Twists, and Bends by Annette Wellings. There is a lot you can do besides rush off to surgery so look into all options please.

                update

So we started with Schroth therapy, had the brace apt scheduled.

Then My dd broke her hand and made the PT a bit more challenging, since she can't hang by her hands.

During the Schroth therapy we noticed a small curve on the xray films towards her tailbone...then her lumbar curve..and thoracic curve. So a 4 degree curve.

I asked the Orthopedic about the low curve...he stated it was not something they are concerned with and don't treat.

I decided to go to Chiropractor care, as an additional therapy. I like this chiro, he had helped me in the past with sciatic nerve pain. He is an honest guy...and He thought he could help with the lowest curve....and we all were wondering if that caused the or contributed to the other curves. I know most here are against chiropractor care...and I do believe you should always have a Orthopedic as part of the treatment plan.

Anyway we went for six treatments...and then had a films taken with measurements...a 25% reduction in curves was noted. Now people are getting excited...like my dd, because now she is back to waiting and watching...NO brace for now.

Another thing happened during adjustments...she would get stubborn low blood sugar reading. so for those brief moments her body was making insulin...then ofcourse it was just a moment...she still needs insulin.

The scoliosis may have contribute to the diabetes and affect the nerves going to the pancreas....the body is a mystery.

I remember reading sometimes scoliosis improves on its own too...sometimes it stays the same and sometimes it progresses no matter what...it is Your scoliosis may vary kinda a deal...but for now

The PT/ schroth and the chiro is working for us....and her curves are back to 20* Rt thoracic and 22* lumbar.

I am praying it stays that way....I really dislike all the films needed to be taken to keep an eye on it.

Thanks so much for all this. I was not sure about chiropractic but it seems to have helped in your case. Thank you for this encouraging post.

BTW, I am hoping to undergo Schroth this summer.

                    Just got back brace

my daughter got her back brace from Luke yesterday. She's 12 almost 13. Right now she is adding an hour each day to wear it. She was a bit ornery yesterday, but seemed better today. It was very heartbreaking watching her sleep in it last nite....Luke was fabulous. As my younger son said to me this morning as i explained about her gradual transition into the brace "Luke sounds nice mommy!" That said..i'm looking into PT for her. I'm not sure how dedicated she would be to following the Schroth method...anyone with experience using this PT especially with pre-teens and teenagers?
This forum is great..lots of great tips and ideas!!

Haven't seen any new posts from you. Dying to know how it's working for you! Has the chiropractic continued to help? Does he/she have special training in Scoliosis? I think most chiros can't do anything about reducing the curves, but it sounds like yours did. I wouuld be interested to hear more.

Also, I am looking into Schroth for my daughter. I bought the book by Katharina Schroth's daughter, but is difficult if not impossible to do on one's own. Can you tell us more about the clinic and the exercises?

                        Thanks for sharing your story.
