Have you had the rods removed?

I have a t11-L3 fusion. Now I have a lot of problems with my lower back. The Dr. Say think about having them removed. Has anyone had this. How long is the recovery. Do you have to use a brace during the recovery? It has only been fuse for 16 months. Mine was fused as a result of a fracture. I would really appreciate any info you might have on the removal surgery and what to expect.
