  • back ache in morning

My daughter, age 11, was diagnosed 4 months ago with a curature of 30. The doctors have given us very little info and told us to wait and see what happens. She is having her next x-ray in 2 months to see if her curve is progressing. Her pain is worse in the morning usually her hips but now in her back and ribs(in her front). I was wondering if anyone has tried a memory foam matress for their bed and if so did it make any difference.
I am also having difficulty in finding a physio who specialises in pilates. I live in the Lanarkshire area of Scotland.

    Hi,
I didn't try the actual mattress, but I recently got a memory foam pad that goes on top of my regular mattress. It hasn't made the pain go away entirely, but pain no longer wakes me in the night, so that is definitely a benefit. It also makes me more comfortable when I am trying to fall asleep, whereas before I would have trouble finding a comfortable position due to the pain/strain. Hope I helped.

    My name is Allie
I'm in the ninth grade and I'm 14 years old
    Curves are 45 and 44
I see Dr. Horton at the Emory Spine Clinic
I tried 3 different Boston braces prior to the decision to have surgery
Surgery is scheduled for December 27, 2007 at Egleston
    I'll be fused from T4 to L3

Just a caution: I too once bought a 5-inch thick memory pad for my bed. I turned it regularly (not easy because it was very heavy) and it was fine for awhile but it eventually matted down where I slept and was very uncomfortable - I kept rolling down to the middle! I thought it was my mattress (brand new) but when I finally ripped the memory foam off the bed I was fine. It was NOT money well spent.

        Hi
Thanks for your replies. I think i will try one and see how it goes. My daughter is very thin and only weights about 6 stone so i think it will be a benifit to her.
Great site and getting lots of new info.
        Thanks

          I LOVE my mattress

Ourlena, I have a memory foam mattress (Tempurpedic). My hips do not hurt nearly as much as before. I couldn't even turn in bed without terrible pain so for me this matress makes a huge difference. I have it three years. Since I had no idea what "stone" meant, I looked it up. I am 8 stone so I'm small as well. I learned something today! Thanks and good luck, LYNN

              HI Everybody this is me

Hi everybody I am the new kid on the block!

My name is Sophie, I am NEARLY 12 years old (my birthday is on Columbus Day, 10/8 [!!!!!!!!!!!]), and I live in Westchester/NYC. I am Chinese, about 100 lbs, and 5'6.5" (which is HUGE for my age, people think I am 16 or something)
I play a lot of sports, includin tennis and swimming. I have been swimming since 3 years old because I had asthma and swimming completely obliterated it from my life.
I was diagnosed with scoliosis on July of this year with a T45 curve and a L30 curve. The doctor referred us to a scoliosis surgeon and he recommended surgery. My family and I, however, decided to wait and see what would happen. In August we got another x-ray and this time my curves were T54 and L35. I was really scared and worried because our surgeon pressed me to have scoliosis ASAP in late September 07.
My mother spent countless sleepless nights searching the web, looking for an alternative treatment(s). Soon she found a man named Dr. Manuel Rigo in Barcelona, Spain. He teaches the Schroth method of physical therapy.
This year I started at a new private school in NYC so we could not go to Barcelona, but my mother e-mailed Dr. Rigo and the kind soul e-mailed her back during his vacation! What a nice person, I would love to meet him someday. He referred us to three people he taught who are currently in the US: Luke Stikeleather in Fairfax, VA, who makes Cheneau braces and Beth Janssen and Patricia Orthwein in Stevens Point, WI, who teach the Schroth method of physical therapy.
Just last week my mother and I went to Wisconsin to see them. They are a truly wonderful pair along with their co-workers Jan and Julyane. It is a great alternative to going to Barcelona if you can'y go to Spain. They even booked us a great hotel five minutes from their clinic, Scoliosis Rehab. Find out more at scoliosisrehab.org
Well, I am back in NY now but I still don't want surgery. If there is anything anybody knows please write on this forum or contact me:

I have to agree about the memory foam - it was so comfortable at first, but now, that it's molded, I can hardly roll over. I also turn it and flip every 2 weeks.

So others of you do have hip pain when you wake up? Is this from the spinecor brace or from scoliosis? We think we determined that the waist band was too tight and that is what was causing it. However, after another night's sleep, it came back in a slightly different place.
