rod pain

i have a 7 disc fusion with 6 screws and harrington rods in its been 6 yrs i thought when the rods are put in the can not be taken out my doc says he needs to take them out what happens then to the spine i am having surgerey on may 2 please help i am scared the first time was horriable i woke up with no feeling from the waist down and went thru hell is the 2nd time around better i need to be ready body and mind i am fused from s1 to t11 with left side numbness and dropped foot thankyou
