  • Dr. James Policy, Northern CA

We'd love to have some feedback on our doctor at Children's Hospital, Oakland, Dr. James Policy. We have really like his office and him for three years. We have had a change in our daughter's condition 18 months post-bracing, and it looks like surgery. So, if you know anything, or have any suggestions involving the hospital, or our doctor, can you post here?

Our insurance (United Health Care) posted some great info on scoliosis related fusions done last year at our children's hospital. It listed incidence of complications, number of patients done, mortality (none, yay), length of hospital stay, etc. We were able to compare that to other children's hospitals in our area which felt pretty useful. Its reassuring to know more, even when the info scares the hell out of us, contemplating surgery is stressful in itself.

I thank you in advance for any opinions on Dr. Policy. He has a great rep, and he's a wonderful, upbeat doctor who is reassuring. But surgery comes as a shock and I'd love to hear from others who had the surgery at this hospital and/or with this doctor.

    Thank you,
    Martha K

    Hi Martha...

I've heard Dr. Policy's name, but I've never talked to any of his patient's or their parents. Even if you love him, I'd recommend getting a second opinion, just to be certain you're doing the right thing. You can find a list of specialists here:

My second opinion is with Dr. Rinsky at Stanford/Lucille Packard next Friday. Yay for the second opinion! LOL

Is it wrong to hope she is in great shape and suddenly no longer needs surgery?

Here's something interesting...Dr. Policy is not on the srs list, but, he is the director of scoliosis at Children's Hospital in Oakland. How important is the SRS list?
