  • A 6-years old Girl with idiopathic scoliosis from Serbia

We have a 6-years old girl with thoraco-lumbal scoliosis. Her Cobb angle is 33 degrees (thoracic) and 23 (lumbal). Our orthopedics suggested that she should wear TLSO brace and physiotherapy. However, we found an information about SpineCor and we would like our daughter to be examined by other specialists.
As we live in Novi Sad, Serbia, we saw that the nearest SpineCor Treatment Centre is in Hungary. We phoned dr Judit Farkas in Budapest and set a meeting with her on Friday, April 27th. We can't wait to see if our Sofija is a candidate for SpineCor. Does anyone have any experience with Hungarian specialists?
I myself am a pediatrician and I am interested if there is a possibility to found a Treatment Centre in Serbia, too. I think many children would benefit of it!

    Hi,

I personally haven't come across any parents who have sought treatment in Hungary for the Spinecor.....there is a very long Spinecor thread in another section however I have read the Hungarian study that was done by the same doctor you're scheduled to see on the Spinecorporation website. From what I can tell, she obviously knows how to fit the brace since some of the results were quite remarkable.

Good luck with your visit to Hungary and I hope your daughter is a candidate!

I don't have any experience with the Hugarian specialists, but have loved the brace for my daughter. Rachel had a 38T/27L curve in January of 2006. The TLSO did not correct her curve even one degree! I had to look for another option. I found the Spinecor online and contacted Drs. Rivard and Coillard. They fitted her for the brace in January.
In April, I met with Dr. James Sanders at Erie, PA Shriners. He told me that no brace would help Rachel. At that time, we had not had a Spinecor followup appointment. He told me that Rachel had a 100% chance of progressing to sugery, and statisticallly, with traditional bracing, that is correct.
Thank the Lord for the Spinecor. She has grown 3 or 4 inches and her curve is 22/20 in brace as of January 2007.
Keep us posted! There is a sweet network of Spinecor parents on this website. They have been a GOdsend.
        Best of luck!
I hope the brace works for you, too!
        Hugs

God has used scoliosis to strengthen and mold us. He's good all the time!On this forum these larger curves have not held forever in Spinecor, with an initial positive response followed by deterioration. With deterioration, change treatment. The first year she gained 4 or 5 inches and was stable at around 20/20 in brace, followed by rapid progression the next year. She is now 51/40 (Jan2008)out of brace (40/30 in Spinecor) and started at 38/27 out of brace(Jan2006.) Now in Cheneau.

          Thank you very much everybody.
          We'll surely keep in touch.
It feels great to know that there are other so young children to have succeeded with SpineCor.

            August

            Hi everybody!
We were in Budapest yesterday. Sofija was examined by dr Judit Farkas and she said that our daughter is a candidate for SpineCor! However, she emphasized that Sofija has a very good posture, in spite of her thoracic curve of 29 degrees (as she measured it). Therefore, she suggested that Sofija continues her exercises and swimming until August. Then she will examine her again, with X-rays in lying and standing position and she will get SpineCor.
We asked if that would be a long time to wait and if her scoliosis would worsen until August, but dr Farkas said that it is better for our child to have one more active and free summer than to begin wearing SpineCor now.
We also showed dr Farkas the TLSO brace we got from our specialists and she said that it would not do any good for our daughter, in fact that it is badly made (symetric) and that it would just be an armor for her body, as well as for her soul.
We were fascinated and delighted with competence and warmth of dr Farkas and we shall surely look up to her advice and come again to see her in August.
            Thank you for your support,

dr Andrija Srek, Novi Sad, Serbia

I am happy for you that your daughter is starting the Spinecor. I wish that she could start it now. Her body will not feel restricted in the Spinecor and she can take it off for swimming.

I'm very surprised this doctor is not starting treatment right away given that your daughter has a 29 degree curve. It states in the Spinecor website that one shouldn't expect great results once curves progress to the 30 degree range so I can't imagine reasons for not wanting to put her in the brace. Are the summers very hot in Serbia

The curve can definitely worsen in a few months. Rachel's curve was 18 degrees in January of 2005. In July, it was 24 degrees, and our orthopedic decided to wait until it was over 25 degrees. By December of 2005, her curve was 33 degrees. The TLSO made for Rachel did not correct her at all. Six weeks later, January 24, 2006, the day she got her Spinecor brace, her thoracic curve was 38 degrees. That is 20 degrees in one year, and 14 degrees in the last 6 months. I wish I had known to go ahead and brace her when her curve was 24 degrees. I wish I had known about Spinecor when her curve was at 18 degrees. I didn't find out until her TLSO didn't work and I did some research online, that Spinecor even exited. Had she been brace at 18 degrees, she would probably have an extremely low curve or none.
If you have doubts, contact Dr. Rivard and Dr. Coillard directly. Their e-mail is on the spinecorporation.com website, under providers in Canada.
                  Hugs and best wishes!

I agree with all the responses you have had. It is great your daughter is a canidate but waiting that long is a worry. Exersize in spinecor is the best possible treatment, you may want to contact the docs in Montreal. Dr Rivard will give you his HONEST opinion.

Dr. Rivard and Dr. Coillard have been using the brace that Dr. Coillard designed for at least 10 years, I think. They are kind and compassionate and would be more than happy to offer their input. They have been very kind to us.

I retrieved the following information from the Spinecor website:

To really change the natural progression of idiopathic scoliosis, it is essential to reduce the curvature enough to eliminate the negative impact of abnormal bio mechanics and growth. Therefore, it is possible to achieve a complete or almost complete correction of moderate curves, if the treatment is started before the main growth spurt (before Risser 1 and menarche). In curves over 30 degrees of Cobb angle, or when the treatment started during or after the main growth spurt, the goal of the treatment is a stabilization of the deformity. The therapeutic success is possible in more than 80% of cases. The reference reducibility calculated as early as at 3/4 months of treatment, is useful in defining the prognosis. However, for individual prognoses, the impact of the severity of the bone deformation, pattern of the growth and compliance must be considered.....SpineCor® is highly effective for the early treatment of idiopathic scoliosis as demonstrated in the case study and also offers significant benefits to patients who present late. The real challenge is, therefore, to increase awareness of the absolute importance of early diagnosis and, that a viable treatment for early intervention is now available. Clearly it is easier to prevent progression of a small curve than to reverse the deformity in a large curve. Timing is of absolute importance - the later treatment is started the lesser the possibility there is to change the curve, as the child's growth runs out so does the possibility to make any change....

                          It's OK

Thank you everybody, specially Celia for your help.
I think the time plays very important role in children in pre-adolescent period when intensive growth makes scoliosis worse every month. But in 6-years old girl, it is probably reasonable to wait for a period of few months. I'm not sure.
Anyway, the SpineCor Treatment Centre in Budapest is quoted on SpineCor web site as one of Cetres in Europe, so I don't have any doubts in their competence. dr Farkas was trained in Montreal with dr Coillard and dr Rivard so she should know how this is done.

You're welcome! Unfortunately no one can tell what will happen with your daughter's curve as you wait three or four months although I do agree the likelihood of having the curve progress is low, it can and does happen nonetheless. I've come across many parents who put their trust in orthopaedic doctors only to have their hopes shattered.
