  • pain pain pain

Hello to all. I will be 36 years old on June 1. I have only known about having scoliosis since last year. I have a lot of leg pain (shooting down my legs). I also have a lot of neck, shoulder and low back pain (exspecially when riding in a car or driving. My doc has had me taking neurotin 600 mg 3 times a day, baclofen 2 times a day, and elavil at night to help me sleep. But nothing seems to help. I have a long car trip ahead of me ( about 4 hours one way)
    any suggestions....

Unfortunately, i feel your pain! I have had the same symptoms as you for years now, and took some of the same medication, with very view results. Have you had an MRI or bone scan? The pain I was dealing with ended up not being from my scoliosis. It was due to a few herniated discs and a bulging disc that was pushing on my S1 nerve, causing the shooting down the leg pain. Prescriptions usually dont fix that pain. This summer I'll be meeting with a neuro surgeon to discuss the surgery to fix the bulging disc. For your long car trip, I'd tell your doctor your issue and maybe he can give you some great pointers. When I'm suffering from the pain I use those stick on extra strength icy hot patches. They don't always do the trick, but they relax me a little bit. A foam pillow or one of those curved neck pillows made for the car/airplane may help also. If I think of anything else I'll let you know!

      thanx

Thanx Checka. I was told that I had a slipped disc about 2 years ago, but my doc said that I would always have back pain because of the scoliosis. I have to admit that I'm not very happy with her care right now. She has sent me to physical therapy a few times, didn't help...but she is a general practitioner and doesn't seem to want me to go to a specialist. I can't even get her to do another set of xrays it's been over 2 years since the last set and forget about an mri, she doesn't think I need one. Thank you for the tips, I live for heat on my back! I've got to get me one of those pillows!
I hope to hear from you again soon...you have been very helpful!

I would suggest that you see you GP again or even a different gp and ask them to reffer you to an orthapeadist or a neuro.

If you say you have a herniated disc which is quite possible a neuro doctor would be the best choice as you will most probably get a MRI scan.

I wouldnt let your GP push this to one side..

        regards

          Thanx Dave
I think you are right my GP seems to be seeing so many patients that she has lost her ability to be a thorough doc. I have to remember that she is not a GOD and let her know that I won't let her just push me to the side. I'm sure an MRI would be a useful tool for her to help me with my care or maybe at least help a specialist with my care. Hope to hear from you again soon!
          thanx,

Yea I would push for you to see a specialist as they are the best to judge this.

There are a few things that a neuro consultant can see in the MRI

Herniated disc possible prolapse which can cause the servere pain you have alsi which has just been resently diagnosed for me is a Teatherd dpinal cord Caused by a fatty tissue which helps split the cord.

I think a GP can only diagnose so much before a specialist is needed and I think in your case a proper examination via a specialist would be beneficial.

            Regards

            Dave

Does Neurontin help with the pain any? Im curious because I was taking Ibuprofen, now have progressed to Hydrocodone just whenever I need it. I don't like it much because it makes me so drowsy I can't take it at work. But, this pain is just too much at times. Sometimes not bad. I average about one pill every other day - I was just curious if anyone else had any good luck with taking anything else? My dr said he would do whatever I wanted him to do - that kinda worried me, must think it's bad.... My appt is not until Aug 19th in St. Louis...

                Hi Rita...

Neurontin is not a pain medication, but helps to block nerve pain.
