  • Scoliosis complicated by blood disorder

I am a mother of a 20 year old son who has been told his scoliosis has progressed to the point of needing surgery. He also has a blood disorder, heterozygeous Protein C deficiency that predisposes him to blood clotting, as well as a mitral valve prolapse. I am greatly concerned about having him undergo surgery, as my brother had this surgery in 1985 at the age of 36 and died as a result of a pulmonary embolisim.

I am looking for anyone who may have a similar situation and could offer some insight as to where to go to find a surgeon versed in extremly complex spinal fusion surgery. I am in Omaha, NE.
