  • Looking for revision Doc in Midwest

I am 34 year old male Fused at age 17. I am looking for a Doctor to consult with about daily pain. (every day 10 years plus and getting worse) I had 3 harrington rods put implanted in 89-90 fusing 14 vertabrae corrected from 55 degees to unknown. My surgery was done in Minneapolis at Nothwestern Abott by a Doctor Ogilvey who is no longer there. Anyone no where he went? I called last year to get my records only to find out they were shredded. I saw my loca.l back doc here in Dubuque Iowa only to be told that i would at some point need more lower back fused due to commpression and have some of my flatback redone. He did mention that there was some sort of laser procedure that would kill the nerves that allow you to feel pain in your back? I really don't trust this guy as he is a general back doc. Any input would be greatly appreciated, the more i read on here about how much pain alotof your are in the less I feel sorry for myself. Some of you need help alot more then i do. I would just like to get my pain under control so i can enjoy my kids growing up.

    Hi...

Dr. Ogilvie is now in Salt Lake.

I don't know anyone in Iowa, but Dr. Bridwell in St. Louis has a great reputation as a revision surgeon. There are also a lot of specialists in Minneapolis, but I honestly don't know which ones do a lot of revision surgery.

    Regards,
    Linda

        Finding a doctor after Ogilve

        Hello,

Dr. Ogilve was my back doctor for a long time and did my surgery when i was 13 years old (June 12, 2000). He has retired since then. Recently I found out my scoliosis was getting worse and so I looked for a new doctor. First I went to Dr. Denis at the Twin Cities Spine Center. I would NOT reccomend him. During my surgical consultation he kept inching towards the door, acting distracted, and was unable to find my xrays. He was rude to me and barely looked at my actual back.

I am now going to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and my doctor there is Dr. Staans. He is really nice and has a great bedside manner. Very helpful and thoughtful. He is on the young side. He will be my surgeon for my operation this summer at Mayo.

        Hope this helps!

          Hi,

I just had a revision surgery with Dr. Purnendu Gupta at the Univ. of Chicago Hospital. He is by far the best surgeon I have met yet. He's very personable and knowledgeable. He has a great staff working with him as well. I've had a great experience there. Here's a link where you can see his info and a picture:

Posterior Spinal Fusion for a 76 degree curve in 2000 at age 19. Two rods placed, fused from T4 to L2. Curve reduced to a 29º.
One rod broken and noticing increased pain in 2004. Curve progressed to 39º.
March 2007 Revision surgery- Rods removed and discovery of unhealed fusion. Had new rods placed along with new bone from Thoracoplasty and BMP.
