  • Tethered cord and fusion

    Hello Everyone-
My name is Jim, and I am the father of a 13 month old girl, Paris. I have been reading some of the entries (actually many) with great interest.
At 8 months I noticed a hump on Paris' back. Since then we have had an x-ray and been to see a spine specialist at UCDavis, Dr. Roberto, whose initial diagnosis is a tether of a portion of her spine, with a curve measuring 24 degrees.
There were no other notable observations at the initial exam.
His preliminary suggestion to a possible solution is fusing the opposite side of the spine to limit the curve.
Currently, we have an MRI scheduled for Paris when she is 18 months old (due to concerns of anesthesia) and another x-ray. I believe with the MRI he is to confirm the tether as well as check for other abnormalities.
We are in the process of getting a second opinion.
My wife and I have many questions and are looking for any input on our daughters condition, the idea of fusing her spine at this early age, alternative treatments, other experts in the field that may be worth talking to, etc.
I don't mean to be so wide open with this initial post, I just don't know where to start and am a bit concerned about letting too much time pass.
    Thank you,
    Jim

    Hi Jim...

I don't know how difficult it would be for you to come to SF, but Dr. Mohammad Diab at UCSF has a great reputation for treating very young children with scoliosis. He would be a great for a second opinion. You can see his bio here:

      Linda,
A trip to San Francisco is not a problem. If there is anything else you can tell about his practice I'm all ears. Regardless, I will check it out.
      Thank you for the help.
      Jim
