  • New pain

I have been doing real good. No pain to really bother me. I have been doing what ever I wanted all summer long.
Just recently I have had an area in my back that is so tender.
It is just a small area but boy does it hurt. More tender to the touch than anything. It is about mid way down and next to my incision.
I was wondering if maybe I had a screw irritating me. I have not had to take pain meds but have been using a lot of moist heat. It seems to help for awhile then its back. If anyone has had this happen to them please let me know what they did that helped. I am going to give it a while and if it doesn't get better I am going to go see my Dr.

    Hey Mattie,

I have it sometime(both sides around T5), and not much I do about it. Resting and ice packs can help. Massages or acupuncture make it worse, and repetetive movements also. Doctor says a nerve is irritated b/c of the screws, or maybe one side of the rod is unstable still but he fixed as much as he could.

    Good luck.

I was thinking maybe a screw was irritaing that area. It usually is worse in the evening after being on the move all day. I am going to just deal with it this week and if not any better I am going to see my Dr. Thanks for the help.
At least I know I am not the only one that has this problem. Probably nothing the Dr. can do like you said but it sure is painful at times. It is irritating to think I have been through all these operations and have this new pain pop up all of a sudden. My summer has been practically pain free until now. Maybe I will have to just learn to live with it. Thanks

        new pain

I went to my GP Monday. After he examined me he thought maybe something was not right with my hardware. He ordered x-rays. I got the results yesterday. The x-rays show a slight change in hardware and a change in spine. He is setting up an appointment with an orthopaedist.
He thinks the same as I do that with the area that is real tender is such a small area that it is probably a screw causing me problems.
I will no more after I see the specialist.
The surgeon I had for my surgeries has moved out of state so now I have a new Dr.

I hope it's not a big change and hopefully a new ortho can get more info and be helpful for you. Do you see any change in your scar(like it's crooked) or any hump in your back?

          Keep us posted.

No I have not noticed any change. Even the area that is so tender does not stick out. My hump is no different that I have noticed. I am just hoping I don't have to have surgery again. Three times is enough for me. Thank you for responding to my thread.

Mattie, never mind honey. I have pain in what appears to be exactly the same spot as you. I have had pain for years down the bottom part of my back but have only had the "new pain" for a few months. I seems to be worse or sorer somehow that the other pain. Yes it is tender as well.
Will be interested dear how you get on, please let us know. I find rest helps. Sweetness is right, massage stirs my back up as well, evem Physical therapy.

              God bless

                macky,
I see the Dr. Tuesday. I now have 2 tender areas. One is half way down the other is almost at the end of my rods. I hope it is nothing serious but I am taking no chances. If something is wrong I want to know what and what can be done for it. I am so tired of living in pain. I had pain in my hip for years. Then after my surgeries I had a pain free summer, I done anything I wanted.
For this pain to all at once come on somethings not right, I have this gut feeling.
This week also I have been having right hip pain again. I will keep you posted what I find out.

Oh Mattie, golly I am sorry for you. It does get one down sometimes doesnt it.
I agree with you as it is far better to find out what is going on. I think also women know their bodies very well and sometimes can tell when there is something wrong.

My doctor the majority of the time more or less asks me what I think is going on. I cannot diagnose myself but I usually have a gut feeling exactly the same as you.

                  Fingers crossed for you,
                  God bless honey,

Macky, I am not down really. I just want to know whats wrong and how it can be fixed or what. My husband said this morning I sure hope you dont have to have surgery again I'm tired of all these surgeries. I said me too but I can not go on with this pain. I said you should be in my shoes its not your back they are cutting open. He was just trying to say that hes tired of these surgeries just as much as I am. He has been with me through them all. Hes done all my dressing changes and helped me get dressed when I couldnt do it.
He just hates to see me in so much pain. He hated it when he had to change my dressings and hte tape would hurt so bad he would appoligize over and over.
I go tomorrow so I will know something one way or the other tomorrow.
I am not leaving that office until I get some answers.
This Dr. is not the one that done all my surgeries. The other one moved out of state so I got transferredto this one. He is real nice and seems to know what hes talking about. He has done lots of adult scoliosis surgeries he said.

Hi Mattie, I do hope you get the answers you need tomorrow. Your husband sounds so kind helping you with everything. Its so hard to see someone we love in pain.

I will admit I did have a laugh when you said you werent going to leave without answers, way to go Mattie, you are a girl after my own heart!

                      still got those fingers crossed.

Macky, I got back from the Dr. He said the x-rays looked good. Everything is in place. He said the tenderness I have in that one area is a screw. As I thought to begin with.
He said it is causing inflamation. He wants me to try using BenGay on that area a couple times a day. He has also set me up with a pain clinic. He wants me to have injections around my screws to help with the inflamation. I forgot to ask what the injections were called. I know they are suppose to help with the inflamation. He said if that doesn't help and the inflamation doesn't go away I will have to have one rod and the screws on that side removed. He said he would not dare take out both rods. But he wants to take the less invasive procedure first. He really doesn't want to due surgery on me, and I don't want to have another one either. But I did get the answers I was looking for. Maybe someone on here has had the injections and knows about them. If they helped them or not. I will keep you updated. And by the way how are you doing? I got so caught up in my own problems I didn't ask about you. Sorry.

Hi Mattie, thanks so much I was so looking forward to see how you got on.

Your doctor really appears to be one of the best. He knows what he is talking about doesnt he. I mean about only taking out one rod if necessary and also sending you to a pain clinic.

I thought it may have been a screw too and I reckon mine is as well. I do like doctors who take the lesser invasive way first, send him over here to me. (haha)

The injections are a good idea as well because hopefully they will settle down the pain for you, and you have the pain clinic as back up.

I am still the same ,but really am so glad that you were kind enough to post as you have answered a few questions of my own. I know everyone isnt the same and all that, but I had a feeling our pain was similiar up the top bit anyway.

Thanks again, keep in touch, fingers still crossed ( prolly stay that way now!)

                          God bless

                            Hi mattie,

glad all is in place. I was told I could have inter costal nerve blocks, but then docs were fearful of an infection b/c the injection would be close to my spine(hardware).

                            Good luck.

I am going to find out more about these injections before I have them. I am going to ask them to explain the procedure and exactly where they go.
I sure do not want complications from having them. It will be next week before I go to the pain clinic. We are haggling with the insurance company. This pain clinic is not in our network. Imagine that, it happens everytime.
Hope everyone has a good turkey day.
