Structural, Thank You for the information it sure did help. I don't want to injure myself and not know I was hurt. It sounds to me like if the Dr. burns the nerve then you would have no feelings in that nerve at all and a person could get injured and not even know it. Kind of scary. I have two more sets of injections before I consider that. I will talk to my Dr. about it before he does anything like that. I want to know the ins and outs of it before I agree to it.
I wish that Macky could get some help for her pain, sounds to me like she has quite a bit of pain, poor thing.
    Again thanks for the info.

Well spincon58, in my case it has been like this. An alternative doctor has not worked for me ie-- chiropractor, naturopath, osteopath and so on. Physical therapy has helped, and hydrotherapy in the pool. I have tried all the facet injections, and any other injection you can think of but I am afraid that has been it, nothing has done much good.

I personally would not now have my rods out, even if I could find a good revision surgeon here in Aussie land. , As the last few years they have found that sometimes the spine does start to curve again with them taken out even if the spine is fused. I think I am right there., sorry if not.

But spincore, my op was done ages ago, Yours only recently and I cant work out why ,only after such a short time what has gone wrong. I am not very experienced with the new way of doing the scoliosis operations.

There are people on this forum with so much more knowledge than myself and if I were you I would perhaps start another thread and ask them.
Maybe under a heading of just "HELP 2 1/2 years after surgery things going wrong."

Hope this has helped you and you can get the answers you need. What has happened to myself probably has nothing to do with what is going on with you if you get what I mean. You may be able to be helped, and I reckon it will be all good, so dont worry.

    God bless,
    Macky xx
Operation 1966, Fused from T4 to L3, had Harrington rods inserted. Originally had an 85 degree Thoracic curve with lumbar scoliosis as well but had a good correction.
Perfectly normal life till 1997 but now in a lot of pain daily. Consider myself very fortunate though.

Well Spincon58 this is my story.
I had my first surgery in 2004, I was 46. 1 year after my surgery I had a screw come loose and it caused my rod on the right to push out at the bottom.
My surgeon decided that he would take out my rods, he said I would be fine that I was completely fused. In 2005 almost 1 year to the day he took out all my hardware. I went back to him in 2 weeks to have my staples taken out and of course they x-rayed my back. He said my curvature was back that I was not fused after all. So 2 weeks later he put all new harware in, longer fusion and more screws. He left my state shortly after that. He transferred me to another surgeon. Now I have a rod sticking out at the bottom again and a area around a screw at the top that is irritated. My new surgeon recommended injections instead of surgery. He does not want to open me up. If he can avoid it. I had two injections 3 weeks ago. They were very painful.
I had one at the bottom of my fusion and another at the middle of my spine toward the top, both on the right side. The injection at the bottom was a success so far, no pain. the top one didn't help, still a lot of pain. I went back today and had another injection in the top. It wasn't to bad this time. It hurt but not as bad as last time. They are giving me epidural injections. I hope this one helps. I do not want to be opened up again if I can avoid it, but these injections are painful and expensive. I will see what this one does and I go back in 4 weeks for another one if needed. I am just praying I don't have to have anymore.
So my opinion is I would not have my hardware taken out. I will never have mine taken out again without it's a life and death situation.
Nobody can tell you what to do all we can do is offer our opinions and hope it all works out for the best.
I will keep my fingers crossed that whatever you decide that you get relief from pain.I know how it is to live with pain everyday.

    hi mattie,
thanks for sharing your story,,...it seems like you had your share of pain...can u explain "rod sticking out from the bottom" ? Isnt there anything they can do for you? Something pernament? For me I'm hoping that they can remove a small segment of the hardwear where my pain is orginating from. I would not want all the hardwear takien out...but once you go under the knife ..its not up to u anymore.....I'm seeing a pain specialist next week and we'll go from there...but my guess is that my pain wont stop unless the source is taken out...

spincon58, The rod is pushed out a little at the bottom. More like it has shifted and the bottom is outward more than when placed. I have no screws loose this time. I don't know what caused it to do this but I will see if I can find out. I never even asked why I just was concerned about getting rid of the pain. I have a knot at the bottom of my incision. I can feel the end of the rod. It was most painful if I was sitting or laying with my back flat against something. It would put pressure on it. But the pain was constantly there. Now it is gone so far. My upper part of my back has not hurt since my injection yesterday. I will just have to see how long it lasts.
My pain clinic Dr. said if these injections don't help he will send a recommendation to my surgeon to remove the screw that is irritated and remove the bottom of the rod that is sticking out. I will just have to wait.
The pain Dr. also told me if they locate the correct nerve that he can burn that nerve and stop my pain for awhile. It is more or less a waiting game now.
I just try to take it one day at a time. That's about all any of us can do I think.

    Pain filled days...

Well, at least I'm not the only one to be dealing with pain...I had surgery in '98, when I was 11 years old and was fine until July of 2005 when I was involved in a SERIOUS MVA, fractured my L2 and had a lacerated spleen but did not have to have any surgery or anything else because of it. But ever since then i've been experiencing increasing pain centered usually around my shoulders and the top 1/3 of my back. Its pretty bad. I've tried a lot of things, exercises, all kinds of otc pain meds, yoga, and will soon be attempting physical therapy and possibly visits to the chiropractor. I was told by my ortho that it is most likely whiplash that is the cause of my pain, but its gotten to the point where I can barely do daily things like laundry, washing the dishes, etc. and cant bear to stand in one position for more than 20 minutes. Lying down at night is hell too. I just feel stuck...not knowing what to do and how to deal.

Would epidural injections be an option for you? Some people get relief and some don't. You might consider it and give your dr a call and see what he says.
I know how it feels to have pain. I am sure from what you have described that mine does not even compare to the pain you are having. hope this helps

I went to the pain clinic Wednesday. I had no pain since last injection so the Dr. released me. He said if I have a problem again than to come and see him. It is so nice not to have to deal with constant pain. Maybe I am finally on the right track again.

Hi everybody. It's been awhile since I been on here. I have been doing ok. Ever since I had those injections I have been doing ok. They helped relieve my pain alot.
I have my days like anyone else but for the biggest majority of the time I am almost pain free. Some days and this according to what I do that day or the day before I have pain but not anything like I had before. I am sure glad I decided to have those injections done.
Well hope everyone is doing ok because I know first hand how it is to live with daily pain. Just wanted to let everyone know I am still up and kicking.
