    Munish Gupta, M.D.

    Hi there.

Has anyone heard of Dr. Munish Gupta and had him as a doctor? I am going to him for a third surgical consultation. I had heard from another physician that he mentered with Dr. Boachie in New York. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Hi...

Dr. Gupta travels to Ghana with Dr. Boachie occcasionally, so I'm certain he's a good surgeon. I wonder, however, why you'd ever consider traveling to Chicago when we have so many great surgeons here in Northern California.

    He's in Sacramento.

He's supposed to be in the Sacramento area. That was what I was told by Dr. Mermer, and he recommended him. He is supposed to be working out of UC Davis Center.

OOPS... sorry. Had a brain fart. There are two Guptas (brothers). Munish is indeed in Sacramento and Purnendu is in Chicago. Both have gone to Ghana with Dr. Boachie.

By the way, I've also heard good things about Dr. Mermer, who did a fellowship with Dr. Boachie.

Is Sacramento closer than San Francisco for you?

    Closer to Sacramento

I'm closer to Sacramento. I really like Dr. Mermer, but I thought I would get a third opinion from Dr. Gupta.

Is this the same Dr. Gupta that practices at Shriners in Sacramento? Or are we talking an adult scoliosis specialist?

    Hi Carmell...

Yes, it's the same person. Like most of the surgeons here in Northern California, he sees both adults and kids.

    Regards,

I met Dr. Gupta. He was very kind. When Shriners in Sacramento started doing VEPTR surgeries last spring, he sent several nurses (including an OR) nurse to be trained on how to help the VEPTR kids post-op. I don't know if any other new VEPTR site has done this, but I thought it was very insightful for him to do. As a parent, it gave me more confidence that they are willing to treat the whole patient, not just the scoli issues.

    Done rambling.

I know it's been about a month since you first asked about Dr Gupta, but I wanted to reply, so I registered just for that. I am a patient of Dr Gupta's. I have been under his care through Shriner's since 2000, when I was 12. He did my anterior spinal fusion June 9, 2003, and I am almost 3 1/2 years post-op. I have had quite a few medical problems, have and seen lots of doctors, but Dr Gupta has been my all time favorite. If he hadn't of done what he did I would be either paralyzed or dead right now. I owe my life to him. Before my surgery I was in terrible pain, taking vicodin every four hours, my discs were herniating, and one of my vertebrae was half gone from the pressure of my curve. I now have a straight spine with no pain, and best of all, I can once again play sports and lift things. I had some complications after my surgery, and they were very rare. But Dr Gupta corresponded with my docs here in Chico until they figured out what I had. He had me transfered back down to Sacramento and admitted to UCDavis Med Center, where I was put under the care of Dr Felix Batistella. Dr B forgot about me and for 3 days, I was not hooked up to ANY IVs...no pain meds, no saline, no tube feedings because I was not allowed to eat. So Dr Gupta stepped in, did his thing, and before I knew it I was in a private room getting 5-star treatment until I was finally well enough to be transfered back to my "home" hospital. I trust Dr Gupta with my life, and I would recommend him to anyone.

    Dr. Gupta

I also had Doctor as my spinal fusion surgeon when I was twelve (year 2000). He was always an amazingly personable man and checked in on me many times during my recovery in the hospital. I have had no complications since the surgery, yet he continues to see me about once a year to check on the condition of my spine. Not only did the surgery go smoothly, but he was also able to correct my curve from 72 degrees back to 14 degrees, which is almost unthinkable. He took pain, discomfort, and embarassment out of my life, while also proving to be a great friend. I would recomend him any day in any circumstance!
