I am concerned about my friend's child(13 years old with probably 4 to 5 inches left to grow, her parents are both 6 ft and over). I saw her at the end of July, at which time she had just been diagnosed with a 10 degree lumbar curve(x-ray by GP and curve determined by radiologist). I looked at her back and pelvis then. There were no visible signs of the scoliosis.
I saw her the other day, her hips were visibly uneven. Her mom took her to the ortho for the first time today. Her pelvis is now uneven by 3/4 of an inch according to the ortho. He did not do a repeat x-ray to measure the curve now and wanted to wait and see her again in December.
Most curves do not deteriorate very rapidly, but I think this one may be. There has been a huge visible change.
My daughter's curve deteriorated rapidly last year, by 20 degrees, 14 in the last 6 months of last year.
    What advice would you give?
    Thanks!
    Cheryl

God has used scoliosis to strengthen and mold us. He's good all the time!On this forum these larger curves have not held forever in Spinecor, with an initial positive response followed by deterioration. With deterioration, change treatment. The first year she gained 4 or 5 inches and was stable at around 20/20 in brace, followed by rapid progression the next year. She is now 51/40 (Jan2008)out of brace (40/30 in Spinecor) and started at 38/27 out of brace(Jan2006.) Now in Cheneau.

    Cheryl,

I don't understand. The ortho is waiting to do an x-ray in September of next year ?

Hmm what did he do?! What #'s did he give her (the ortho); did he use a scolimeter on her back? That's a little disturbing. I wouldn't be comfortable with it all. December's not soon enough (for me anyway). Good luck! p

Hi Cheryl, in this case I would definately get a second opinion. Or alternatively tell your friend to go back to the original ortho and tell him she is not satisfied and wants another Xray done now!
I think some doctors need reminding that these precious children are our precious children and that doctors are not the lord above.
Tell her to stick to scoliosis specialists regardless what you read on the net as I truly feel, having been through it so many years ago myself, and the years after my operation that a specialist is the best way to go in the long term.

Operation 1966, Fused from T4 to L3, had Harrington rods inserted. Originally had an 85 degree Thoracic curve with lumbar scoliosis as well but had a good correction.
Perfectly normal life till 1997 but now in a lot of pain daily. Consider myself very fortunate though.

He is not a scoliosis specialist. Many GP's probably don't know as much as you do about scoliosis and it's progression. When she was referred to a general orthopedic surgeon for her daughter's AIS, I was skeptical. After her visit, I was sick.
Cindy said they are going to ask for an x-ray. I hope this ortho will do the x-ray and knows how to read it. I guess I shouldn't be so negative, but I do not believe a 10 degree curve would cause 3/4 inch difference in her pelvis. I think the curve would have to have deteriorated, but I am not experienced enough to be sure.

Cheryl, Cindy is lucky to have you there looking after her and her daughter. There are some wonderful people on this forum who just know so much about scoliosis, Linda Racine, and Karen Ocker just to name a few.

Dont worry about feeling that you are being negative, that is the only way sometimes to keep pushing to get things some correctly. My scoliosis rapidly deteriated as well, so just keep pluggin in there and keep asking those questions.

Just a thought would Cindy mind if you went to the next appointment?? Maybe an idea. I mean you arent interfering and I think she would realise that.
