  • sharp pain

    Hey everyone,
I had my first surgery done two years ago and then after discomfort I opted to do a second surgery a year after to get the rods taken out. I am now at a year after the second surgery and am developing a sharp pain directly next to my spine. Has anyone ever had anything flare up like this? It started a week ago and is getting more frequent as the days go by. I am up to it hurting every 5 minutes or so. Anyone know what’s going on?

    Hi there,

I get this and it really is horrible! Is it like a stabbing/burning sensation? I think it may be trapped or irritated nerves. I had to have an MRI scan to get this confirmed but I suggest you tell your surgeon.

    Good luck!

      Hi SandraDee...

You should make an appointment with your specialist to discuss this.

        Sharp pain

Hi SandraDee. I had surgery in 1997. For several years after that the site that they took bone grafts from was numb. Gradually I have gotten feeling back there, but the sensation I am now having is of burning, tearing, searing pain. It is not constant but it seems to be worse instead of better. Seems to occur when I am lying down and try to get up. Sometimes it is pretty bad. I asked the forum some time ago if anyone had had the same experience and no one had. I have never found out what it is, but since it is at the site of the graft, I feel that it must be associated with that. Hope you can find some relief. Sincerely, Ann B.

          Hi all,

The burning searing pain sounds like the pain I get in my spine where I have a non-union of fusion....but don't panic! Your pain may be for a completely different reason, but I, too, would say in light of this I would make an appointment to see your surgeon as soon as...

A question to Ann B - Where were your bone grafts taken from?

            bone graft

My bone graft was taken from the right back pelvis. I understand that they took about a cup of bone slivers. Ann B.

              To Ann B

              Hi Ann,

I had my bone graft taken from exactly the same place when I had my first Surgery in 1991. I know the burning, tearing, searing pain you are talking about I'm not exactly sure when I first noticed it, but I have been having treatment for pain in my hip for about 3 years now. I was sent to a pain clinic after seeing my Surgeon who explained that unfortunately it is becoming a common problem for people who donate their own bone for grafts from that site. At the pain clinic they tried a lot of different treatments on me, but in the end none of them gave me any long term relief, however that is not the same for everyone.
I am due for Surgery in November this year to try to remove a piece of damaged nerve tissue from the middle of my scar that has been causing me hell, the Surgeon is also doing a hardware replacement on me as my old rod is broken typical me, if you knew me.

If you want to know anymore about the hip thing I have learnt quite a lot over the past few years, so just ask

If it is really bothering you, which it sounds like it is, then get something done about it, you don't have to suffer in silence and there are things that can be done,

              Take care,

              Kat
