  • Trunk Rotation

Has anyone heard of the term "trunk rotation". At my daughters last visit with the surgeon he noticed a 1-1/2% trunk rotation which was written in his report. I havn't seen him again to ask about this. Is it something that will continue to get worse? Her original surgery was in 2000; revision in 2004.
She still is having pain and has an infection (on a low dose antibiotic for 1-1/2 year now) I believe may be caused by the fusion. The right side of her back protrudes from the top to the bottom, not just the rib hump.

    gscarpato,
I don't know who your doc is, but red flags would be going up if it was my daughter and she has an infection that has been going on for a 1 1/2 yrs.!!!!! Her fusion is NOT CAUSING THE INFECTION. She could have a staph infection, which is why the meds are not getting rid of the infection. Does this doc deal with scoli on a regular basis? Does he/s do several dozen scoli surgeries a year? I really think and can't emphisize enough to run to an other doc for a second opinion. Just make sure that your daughter is seen by an ortho that deals with scoli

      Hi...

I pretty much agree with Sandy. An infection that has gone on that long should be a concern.

Trunk rotation is a normal part of scoliosis. However, if your daughter's trunk is rotating significantly since surgery, that should also be of concern.

        antibiotics over a year???

If the antibiotics have not worked by now I wonder whether the bacteria have become resistent.

A consultation with another scoliosis surgeon and an infectious disease specialist seems warranted.

          Trunk Rotation

Thanks for your response! She has another appointment with Dr. Boachie-Adjei next month and I will ask about the trunk rotation (what can happen in the future). As for the infection, he said it can possibly be her body rejecting the fusion (possibly the bone used from bone bank with her original surgery). After an MRI and bone scan, he said we will discuss this in our next visit. One thing that he did make clear is that nothing is a sure thing. We can possibly remove her hardware, but its no guarantee thats what is causing her pain. I feel her curve will return if she removes the hardware, since her back looks like it has gotten worse in the past 6 years with the hardware in. It is all very frustrating and my daughter is really sick of the whole thing. We'll wait and see what Dr. Boachie says. He has an excellent reputation in NYC. I'll keep in touch.

            Hi...

It sounds like Dr. Boachie is on top of it. I think we all took your words to mean that the surgeon wasn't addressing the situation. Your daughter is in excellent hands.

              Trunk rotation

My daughters doctor wants her to monitor her pain for one year. At that time he will consider another revision surgery. The past month she has been complaining about shortness of breath and her chest hurting her (as if she has a cough - but she doesn't). Last night I had a panic attack because I realized it could be her back. Her xrays show a pretty straight spine but her right side of her back is back to a hump and her breasts are very uneven. Am I panicking for nothing or do I have a legitimate reason? Can this be another continuing complication from her surgery? I don't want to worry her yet since she is under a lot of stress with nursing school and her everyday pain. Anybody? Grace

                Hi Grace,
I had significant rotation when I had my original surgery done, and it couldn't all be corrected. I still have a noticeable rib hump on one side of my back because of the curve and rotation. It stabilized to some degree, but I have had have some time when I felt more twisted and the hump seemed more prominent. Has the trunk rotation increased since her surgery or is the specialist citing what was left from the surgery?

                  Trunk Rotation

Thank you for your reply. Her original surgery was in 2000 and her back looked wonderful with hardly any hump. She had a revision surgery in 2004 to cut one of the rods on the bottom (left too long). They thought this might have been causing pain. In the last six years (more last three years) the hump (not just the top) has come back. It seems to just be getting worse and worse. The doctor never really gave us an answer about the trunk rotation but I am getting very worried.
