  • Baylor Scoliosis Commercial

    Hi...

If you fly American Airlines this month, you'll be treated to a commercial for the Baylor scoliosis clinic. (I've commented before about Dr. Shelokov's affinity to PR.) I think it's good PR for scoliosis, but they make it appear that it's only a problem for women with the tag line of something like "there a some curves a woman doesn't want."

    Regards,
    Linda

What sort of commercial would reach all persons with scoliosis? I think just getting the word out that there is someone who can help you if you have scoliosis is great.

What a sexist remark! I suspect it would never have passed the muster if there were any female orthopedic surgeons out there. From what I've observed, this is one profession that is strictly a male domain. I've yet to come across the name of one female ortho surgeon.

Chris, you may like to learn about Min Mehta, a famous scoliosis specialist from England who has devoted her life to developing ways to treat young children with infantile scoliosis. She's supposed to have retired now but is still working and advising parents on her technique of serial casting, which has actually straightened serious curves in infants. She is absolutely inspirational.

          Hi Chris...

While it's largely a male domain, there actually are more than a few female scoliosis specialists. A quick scan of the Scoliosis Research Society membership list turned about at least a dozen female MD members, including one of my own doctors, Serena Hu.

I wonder if it's mostly a male profession because it's very physical. The first time I watched spine surgery, I was shocked to see the amount of physical strength that was used.

            reply to scoliosis commercial

while it probably would have sounded right if they had mentioned both men and women having scoliosis, since that would be saying males never get scoliosis ,actually there are probably more women then men that have it.am i wrong?i just always heard that girls are more likely to get scoliosis than males.if so that might be why they talked about women. trudy,

Dr. D'Andrea is a female orthopedic surgeon at Shriner's in Phila. She not only performs spinal fusions, but has been very much involved in vertebral stapling, as well.

Dr. Coillard is a female orthopedic who invented the Spinecor brace and can be found in Montreal at Ste. Justine Hospital

                Hi...

If you were looking for a scoliosis surgeon, would seeing an advertisement or print ad:

Give you confidence in the surgeon's skill?
Cause you to question the surgeon's skill?
Have no impact in terms of your opinion of the surgeon's skill?

Thanks very much for your input.

                Regards,
                Linda

Linda if I saw an advertisement regarding a surgeon it would completely put me off going to see that surgeon. I would wonder why the need to advertise in the first place, was business slow?? It would be a no confidence vote from me.

If you were looking for a brain surgeon, would you select the one who has the largest print ad in the "yellow pages?"

                    I rest my case.

what about the dr that does eye surgery,i think laser surgery, he is on commercials all the time.does that mean he doesnt know what he is doing? the surgeon that is advertising is my scoliosis surgeon.i have talked with other patients of his that have done the surgery and they have said great things about him.i have no doubt that he knows what he is doing .im so nervous about the surgery itself that i dont need to hear i should change my mind just because he advertises on the airplane and the news.

                        Hi...

If you believe in your surgeon's talent, than what any of us think shouldn't affect your opinion. When I was getting ready to have my surgery, I had several people urge me to see a different surgeon because he was supposedly "so much better." I took those comments as just someone else's opinion, and they honestly didn't bother me for a second.

                        Good luck with your surgery.

                        Regards,
                        Linda

                          Linda,
In response to your question about advertising.....yes, it would put me off. It would make me wonder why he/she would need to run an ad to drum up business

well in my opinion if i saw a surgeon advertising himself as what he does, yeah that could be kindof show off stuff,BUT if he is advertising a new clinic or hospital type place that does surgeries like scoliosis then i think it wouldnt make a difference.there are some that dont know that scoliosis can be treated as adults. there is a difference in say someone advertising themself and someone advertising a hospital or such.am i right? what exactly did the commercial show that would make it look strange? trudy,

                              Hi Trudy....

I don't think I ever said that it looked strange.
