    Where it comes from?

I have Idiopathic type scoliosis, am 77 years old. Five years ago I started developing back pain which has been steadily progressing in severity. At this point in my life my back is hardly capable of holding my body up so I now use a 3 wheel cart around the house for support. At the pain clinic I was given steroid injections but the relief was brief.

When I saw a back specialist I was told I had 3 options and none of them were any good. Surgeary would last 10 to 12 hours with one year recuperation, which I would no want to go through.

It is a debilitating disease for sure.

During one of my surgeon interviews I was told that "idiopathic scolisosis" means "idiot doctors - pathetic patient". So not true; but I did laugh! The bottom line is nobody knows where it comes from and there are only a few options to deal with the condition: brace, exercise, wait and watch, surgery!

I have done all of the above except surgery, but that is in the planning works for this year.

Scoliosis is the lateral curve of the spine. Idiopathic means they don't know the cause. Mine is idiopathic. My sisters both have small curves, but as to why mine was so progressive, they don't know. Same with my two daughters. One out grew her curve and the other's curve was like mine and needed surgery. It looks like it runs in the family in my case, but not all cases. Then we have the question - why me and my one daughter and not othrs for surgery? That is the idiopathic part

everyone has one leg slightly longer than the other. for some reason our bodies try to correct this. if you were given a heel lift at a young age it would of made your hips level and the development of scholiosis would of been halted to a degree. and halted completely with a brace.
wear a heel lift, make one yourself and you will imediatly notice your walk is less awkward and more comfortable.

My legs were the same length, right up until I had the operation. Over the three years I waited for the operation my legs stayed the same but my curve progressed very, very rapidly. So that did not apply to me at all.

Until recently I am not so sure either that a brace could stop scoliosis altogether, it could certainly help. The spinecor brace though sounds very, very hopeful and could in fact accomplish absolute wonders, I certainly hope so.

Operation 1966, Fused from T4 to L3, had Harrington rods inserted. Originally had an 85 degree Thoracic curve with lumbar scoliosis as well but had a good correction.
Perfectly normal life till 1997 but now in a lot of pain daily. Consider myself very fortunate though.

in general everyone has one leg longer than the other even if it is only a couple of ml. have someone measure your inside leg. everyones differant though so maybe you are perfectly symetrical from the hips down.
