Hello,
I am new to this forum. I am 33 year old female from NY City. I had harrington Rods put in my back when I was 13 years old for scoliosis. I had the surgery done in the hospital of joint diseases in Manhattan. Other than that, I do not really know the particulars. I do know the surgeon's name.
Since having the surgery I have had no problems at all. I have been seriously lucky. The rods have not hindered me from doing anything in the past. I have also never had pain, ever!! It is almost like I never had the surgery at all. If I didn't have the big scar on my back I would not have believed it myself.
I have been very active and ususally swim 3-5 days a week. Anyway, around 4 months ago. I started getting tingling in the back of my neck/ between my shoulders and also had pain in my left shoulder. I had a huge knot in my shoulder. To make a long story short. My PC Doc sent me for an MRI of the neck and shoulder. I was referred to a shoulder specialist. He gave me a shot of cordizone in my shoulder. The pain and Knot seemed to subside. The Tingling in the neck has remained. I have not been swimming since the pain and tingling have started. The week before Christmas, I started getting muscle pain in my arms and legs. Worst in my right arm. Felt like I worked out excessively but I didnt do anything at all. Almost like a cramp. I have trouble brushing my hair because the muscles hurt to lift my arm high or when I carry anything also. My PC Doctor sent me back to the shoulder Dr. Who sent me to a Rheumatologist and Neurologist. The Rheumatologist found nothing wrong, thought it could be Fibro Mylasia, but not sure. The neurolgist is sending me for an MRI tomorrow of the cervical spine. He said that it could be the rods or a pinched nerve causing These issues.
My question, is it possible for me to have a broken rod and not know about it?? Can someone tell me if my symptoms could be that?? I never even thought that it could be the rods causing these issues. I am really nervous. I have been lucky to have never had any issues to date. My back/neck are sore. If someone could let me know if this sounds remotely familar. Please let me know. Perhaps this is not a rod issue at all? THanks in advance.
Bridget
