  • Advice - Re: Harrington Rods

    Hello,

I am new to this forum. I am 33 year old female from NY City. I had harrington Rods put in my back when I was 13 years old for scoliosis. I had the surgery done in the hospital of joint diseases in Manhattan. Other than that, I do not really know the particulars. I do know the surgeon's name.

Since having the surgery I have had no problems at all. I have been seriously lucky. The rods have not hindered me from doing anything in the past. I have also never had pain, ever!! It is almost like I never had the surgery at all. If I didn't have the big scar on my back I would not have believed it myself.

I have been very active and ususally swim 3-5 days a week. Anyway, around 4 months ago. I started getting tingling in the back of my neck/ between my shoulders and also had pain in my left shoulder. I had a huge knot in my shoulder. To make a long story short. My PC Doc sent me for an MRI of the neck and shoulder. I was referred to a shoulder specialist. He gave me a shot of cordizone in my shoulder. The pain and Knot seemed to subside. The Tingling in the neck has remained. I have not been swimming since the pain and tingling have started. The week before Christmas, I started getting muscle pain in my arms and legs. Worst in my right arm. Felt like I worked out excessively but I didnt do anything at all. Almost like a cramp. I have trouble brushing my hair because the muscles hurt to lift my arm high or when I carry anything also. My PC Doctor sent me back to the shoulder Dr. Who sent me to a Rheumatologist and Neurologist. The Rheumatologist found nothing wrong, thought it could be Fibro Mylasia, but not sure. The neurolgist is sending me for an MRI tomorrow of the cervical spine. He said that it could be the rods or a pinched nerve causing These issues.

My question, is it possible for me to have a broken rod and not know about it?? Can someone tell me if my symptoms could be that?? I never even thought that it could be the rods causing these issues. I am really nervous. I have been lucky to have never had any issues to date. My back/neck are sore. If someone could let me know if this sounds remotely familar. Please let me know. Perhaps this is not a rod issue at all? THanks in advance.

    Bridget,
Yes, you very well could have a broken rod. You need to ask your PC to give you a referal to an Orthopedist that deal with adult scoli patients. Good Luck

      Wow-

Thanks Sandy, I was hoping that it wasnt possible to break a rod. I always thought that it would be extremly painful to have a broken rod. Can a rod break without you knowing it. Do they break that easily? I will take your advice to followup with my doctor - I need to have my rods check anyway. This is a real wake up call. I will find an orthopedis near me also. I am assuming that a break would show up on the MRI?? I will let you know what happens. Thanks again!

Can a rod break without you knowing? You betcha! Mine was the sort of thing were I thought I had over worked in my garden and was just a little bit of a pulled muscle. It would let up a bit and then get painful again. It was off and on like that for over a year. Then my husband noticed a lump between my shoulder blades, that's when I went to see my ortho. My doc found it on a stright X-Ray, but, that was in '89 and MRI was not used.

Stateing that the "rod is broke" is really a misnomer. The rod it's self is not broke, though it can. It is more a fusion failure or the development of a psudeo-arthodisis. Translated that means that a part of the fusion has given way due to stress on the area fused.

However scarey this all sounds it is not emergancy...a bit or more uncomfortable, but you have alots of time to see a good ortho that deals with adult scoli issues and decide what you want to do.

          Hi...

Rods can, and do, break. And, yes, I've known people who had no clue that they had a broken rod until it was seen on an x-ray. Your symptom could be anything, however, so I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. If possible, I'd encourage you to get referred to a specialist who has a lot of experience in treating patients with prior fusions. Best known in New York, is Oheneba Boachie.

            Followup

Hello, Thanks for all the advice. I went for an MRI and the neurologist just left me a message on my answering machine saying that the MRI was clean and that nothing abnormal showed up on the MRI of the cervical spine. I guess, I am back to the drawing board. Still have to figure out what is causing this pain in my arms. Glad to know that my rods are still in tack Thanks again for all the advice.

              Bridget,
A slightly herniated disk in your neck may also be the problem with the numbness/tingleing in your arms. You might ask about an EMG .... a nerve conduction test to rule that out. Just a thought

                Tingling just started

Hi there! I'm 44 and had my Harrington rods and fusion done in 1975. I've had no problems over the years (including a fine C-section birth). In the last few months, I've started having a tingling sensation at the base of my neck - top of my rod area. There's also a patch of skin in that area that is numb. I'm thinking it's a pinched nerve or something. Anybody have any ideas?

Yes, if possible, get yourself referred to a doctor who has a lot of experience treating patients with prior scoliosis fusions. Where are you located?

I'm in Toronto, Canada. I've emailed the Spine Centre at the Toronto Western Hospital - we'll see what they say.
