Lisa continues to do well. She started back to school after Christmas break ended on January 3rd. She is doing just fine attending full days. She is very excited about moving on and was very pleased with the school’s warm welcome back. It was our original intent to send her back at the first week in December, and she was certainly capable of attending at that time, but her studies were going so well with the home tutor that everyone agreed that things would work out nicely if we just waited until after the break. Now we know why home schooling is becoming so popular; Lisa is ahead of her class in all subjects. From every aspect, we are certainly glad that we kept Lisa out of school for the time that we did.

    Patricia,

To address your concerns on surgical procedures, we can state that we were very careful to pick a surgeon that recommended the procedure that fit our preferences rather than have a surgeon adjust the procedure to fit our preferences. As an example, we asked one surgeon that normally used autograft what his opinion of allograft was. He then stated that although he normally doesn’t, he would use allograft if we preferred. That left us feeling uncomfortable, kind of like when the mechanic says, “I always wanted to work on a transmission.” It is our opinion to get the doctor’s best recommendations and then if you are comfortable with his skills and the procedure, let him use his best judgement thereafter. Dr. Emans is certainly well known, but nonetheless, we highly recommend talking to some of his previous patients to reassure yourself. Whether or not to do a thoracoplasty depends on numerous factors such as bone graft, thoracic scoliometer reading, flexibility indicated on the benders, apex of the curve, method of instrumentation, self image, and more.

    Have a happy New Year.
